Do I Need A MAC Code?

NO!

From June 2015 there is no longer a requirement for a MAC Code to switch broadband providers. This makes switching quicker, easier and more reliable. Please follow the following advice to ensure your switch is as smooth as possible.

Changing Provider

The first thing you should do before changing provider is confirm that you are switching to the best package to meet your needs.

  1. Find what speeds are available in your area

You can use the handy Speed In My Area tool at Broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk to find actual speeds experienced by Internet users in your area. This is more useful than relying on the advertised Maximum speed. The information is provided graphically on a map of the area. This is particularly useful if you are planning to move home and want to know what is available.

  2. Check your current speed

If you are switching provider to improve your current speed then you should check the speed of your current connection.

  3. Find the best deal from the providers that are available in your area

Broadbandspeedchecker can help here as well. Check out the comparison table. What we like about this comparison page is that you can see the cost for the first year including current offers and connection fees and also the ongoing monthly cost at the end of the deal.

  4. Call your new supplier

This is where you get the benefit of the changes. There is no need to contact your existing provider: simply call your new provider and they will deal with the switch on your behalf.

You will receive letters from both providers confirming the switch. You have 14 days to cancel your switch with no charge.

  5. Pay Exit Charges (if applicable)

If you are still within your minimum service contract then you may have to pay an Exit Charge. You will have been given an estimate in the letter sent to you by your existing provider as part of the switch. This will be within the 14 days that you have to cancel the switch giving you time to cancel if you wish.

Exceptions

  1. Cable / Fibre

If you are switching to or from a cable or fibre service then you may need to contact your existing supplier as well as your new one. Your first call should still be the new supplier who will advise you.

  2. Bundles (TV)

If your current Internet is part of a bundle that includes TV then you may need to contact your existing supplier as well as your new one. Your first call should still be the new supplier who will advise you.

  3. Bundles (Telephone)

If your current Internet package includes phone calls then this will normally NOT requre contacting your existing supplier. We mention it here for completeness.
