Tips & Experience from other Virgin Cable users

virgin made every excuse under the sun for me not to leave stating that sky broadband is useless, there customer service and switching team would not do the're jobs, The usage amount is no-where near enough for us, and after 4 different departments, i finally spoke to wayne in there customer relations department whom used every excuse not to provide me with the code and and then told me that it would be sent via e-mail within 5 days!!! and they wonder why people want to leave!!!
J D House(03/03/2010 12:13:46)
The customer service person I spoke to made it very difficult, refusing to simply agree to give the code and trying to persuade me to stay with Virgin. After several minutes of this, I demanded the code and he accused me of being rude! This is consistent with my general experience of Virgn customer service - awful.

Guys, A lot on here are confused about MAC codes. Basically the MAC code on a router is not needed, however it is the Migration Authority Code (MAC) that people are searching for. However, like most have stated here, the MAC (latter one) is not required if moving from Cable to BT. Hope this clears the confusion.

I had already take O2 broadband
Elliot Wonfor(30/01/2010 10:28:10)
Told, it was on the bottom of the router, then o2 said it was the wrong code, so rang back and virgin said it definately was on the bottom, so rang o2 again, they said virgin may be doing it on purpose to stop us from leaving. After several more phone calls, they said "oh a mac code, my colleague is trying to get one now, ill call you back". Completely useless!

you do not need mac number at all, you will be scammed and charged on premium number if you phone. just call the new preferred broadband company to switch over and they will sort you out for free as you will be a new customer.

I rang Virgin to ask for a Mac code as I would like to switch to another provider. The customer representative asked me the usual questions and I replied that I wasn't happy with Virgin's signal (as it kept breaking every now and then) and the customer care I had throughout my subscription was poor. He told me off for not contacting Virgin for every technical fault I had experienced, however promised me that a MAC code should be with me shortly. 5 days later, I received via the post some correspondence on how to raise any issues with technical faults and no sign of a MAC code...
Wisernow(01/05/2009 17:08:41)
First call requesting MAC code to 08454541111, response was that the code is on the bottom of the modem. It was not. Second call diverted twice finally to a sales rep who told me that they can reduce what I pay for broadband by about 45% and then some spiel that MAC codes can only be given when you are terminating the contract and that offers of reduction will not hold if you are given your MAC code. Finally agreed to send the code by email in a couple of days. We will see.

The mac key is on the side of your cable modem on a white sticker in the format "MAC (your mac key here)" the serial number (SN) is above it. sandwiched between each is a bar code.

Virgin media were rude and intimidating when i called for my code hence why leaving in the first place. I had to ring three different times as 1st 2 people wouldnt give it to me
Toobig(21/02/2009 01:35:10)
You dont need a MAC code. A mac code is the unique address of the modem. If you are switching to BT which is ADSL then that is a completely different system. No Mac code is ever needed. I think you are referring to PAC code to transfer from one ADSL provider to another. This is NOT necessary with Cable (i.e Virgin, NTL.....)

They said I don't need a MAC code to transfer to another cable modem I'm sure that was to keep me on the premium phone line while they waste my time
W.Knight(28/06/2008 14:50:10)
Virgin would not help with a broadband problem because I am on a 'set top box', not modem. I Am switching to Sky !. Phone line was transferred to BT without problem (no MAC code needed) but there is a problem with the final bill.
reuben vernon(26/06/2008 08:39:11)
After being told numerous times they couldnt give me a mac code , I've now been told it's on the side of the modem , I'm expecting this to be untrue , I'd be greatful if someone could advise. kind regards Rubes

virgin media on cable say they dont use mac key becouse there not on bt line
MacCode(04/05/2008 12:20:50)
Andrew, You don't need mac code. Just sign-up with O2 directly.
andrew(04/05/2008 11:25:01)
i want to switch to 02. im with virgin cable do i need to get the mac code from virgin..as virgin funs on cable not bt line. will i still need the mac code?? or can i just use my sisters bt mac code to switch fron 02? thanks
Kaeren(20/03/2008 00:00:04)
Virgin must be the hardes company to contact! Hung on phone for a total of 3 hours over 4 days. Then were told we couldn't have the MAC code as there was less than 30 days to the end of the month [on 1st March] After pointing out their poor arithmetic, we still got no joy! Contacted Ombudsman, who said he was meeting with Virgin that afternoon, and next day, at last we got the MAC code, which we found they HAVE to give you on request, at any time. We have switched to BT, but not sure it was the best move ever!
Mr D. Erskine(10/03/2008 21:32:55)
Speed from Virgin was never good. Got MAC code and moved to Sky now getting around 7.5M on 8M line! Just got letter from Debit collectors - Virgin want payment for broadband since move, No previous letter from Virgin. Unbelievable!!!!!!!
Keith Galbraith(05/03/2008 21:04:58)
Option 4 for the number is a good tip. First woman I spoke to insisted that I be referred to an engineer to resolve slow speed problem but we got cut off. When I called back, I got someone else and they efficiently handled the MAC code request while noting that I had had line speed issues. The line speed has been a problem for a year and no engineer has fixed it. I'm fed up and off to a new provider.
MacCode(27/02/2008 20:10:10)
Robert: We always recommend not cancelling the broadband but asking for a mac code and cancelling after the transition. If you cancel broadband first then you will need to wait before new provider can sign you up.
robert welsby(27/02/2008 19:50:24)
i cancelled my virgin broadband, then asked for the mac code as soon as it was cut off but they would not give me the code saying i dont need it because i have cancelled, but the new provider told me it would be much faster if i had the mac code where virgin right or where they messing me about
Michael Stacey(26/02/2008 11:47:28)
ex ntl virgin custoner - difficult to find number untill I found your site, then as ex ntl MAC's are not sored in the same place as other virgin codes, so transferred and held on line interminably and have still not got through!
MacCode(25/02/2008 18:30:04)
When calling the number Option 4 should be used.
louise(19/03/2007 14:26:17)
Attention NTL customers!
if you were originally an ntl customer call 08004798383 to get your mac code.
MacCode(11/03/2007 10:51:56)

Attention Virgin Cable or NTL customers
Virgin cannot provide you with MAC Code if you are cable customer. There is no migration process from Virgin Cable to another ISP. If you want to switch from Virgin Cable to another ISP then you need to cancel the Virgin and sign-up normally with another ISP.
