Talk Talk advised me that I did not require a MAC Code to migrate from their services but threatened to disconnect my service and I would have to pay £182.62 in compensation. On the whole the conversation, like their services, was pretty terrible.

Completely unhelpful!! I was passed around from department to department, half of them saying they could find my account but would have to pass me through to another department to get my MAC Code and very conveniently that department couldn't find my account! Even when phoning from the Talk Talk landline they said my account wasn't on their system!! Unfortunately I still haven't obtained my MAC Code and still haven't been able to cancel my contract with them. Very irritating and completely unreliable.

talktalk claim that I renewed my contract with them in Mar 11 and this transaction was conducted over the phone. I have no recollection of this phone call and I have not been issued with a statement to say that I have renewed my contract. I have been with them for over four years and am a fully paid up member. They say that the MAC will cost over £200 because I have a 24 month contract with them.

Have been with them for more than 3y(signed up with tiscali though), and finally, after having got fed up with the numerous issues of which main one was slow speed, phoned them up, asking for a MAC... Well, every time these bloody companies start fighting for my money like the hungry dogs for the bone, I just hate it! The lady on a phone was similar to a wife whose hubby is leaving her for another woman, so annoyingly persistently trying to persuade me to stay with them, offering discounts, new routers etc. And at last... Unbelievably, as I wouldn't change my mind anyway, but just can't be rude towards ladies, she persuaded me to think over her improved offer(-£5 in fact) some 2 hours, after what she promised to call me back... You don't have to be too smart to guess out that nobody phoned me back of course... I just genuinely don't get these people... By their acting they only make me even more confident that decision to leave them is 100% right, isn't it? Anyway, tomorrow "the war" kicks off, now no mercy from me, even if on an another end will be sexiest voice in the world... :-)

Just migrated from TalkTalk to BT successfully without knowing about or needing a MAC code. This was under the arrangement where the new ISP 'handles everything', so presumably they get the MAC code directly. The move went fine - and was well-justified! TalkTalk phoned to ask why I was leaving, and when I mentioned the unreliable quality they asked if I'd had their engineer to investigate (Didn't know that was an option, but by then it was too late).

After a week of dial up speed and pointless line tests I got fed up and have decided on a different provider after 2 years of drop outs and slow internet speeds .I Finally got through to them and had to repeat about 10 times that I wanted a mac code , in the end I was losing my temper as the person was continually trying to talk talk me out of it.Was reluctantly promised the mac code in 5 days after a 'cancellation fee'but if it doesn't arrive which is very possible I will complain to senior management if there is such a thing in talk talk . The whole experience is stressful and yet they are getting away with making it as difficult as possible for customers.

I was out of contract at talk talk by six months and wanted to move to sky. I asked for a MAC code on Monday to be told it was no problem and would receive it within 5-7 working days. On the wednesday I got an automated call to say thankyou for renewing my contract. I was furious and rang to complain the customer services said they shouldn't have done it but cannot update my status on the talk talk account web site for 5 days. He also said I dont need a mac code to switch, presumably so I can pay to have the line reconnected? Absolutley furious with them

A MAC code was provided by Talk talk onetel but BT said it was invalid. TT said they could not provide another code for a month by which time the current BT offer will expire. BT said they could only help if our phone number was changed or we cancelled TT and reapplied to them leaving us without email/broadband for 2 weeks. This effectively makes us unable to benefit from the BT offer. We need wireless now as there are 3 of us needing access and our TT speed is like watching paint dry!

Asked for MAC in April. After several emails and sending the Ofcom letter to them I finally get my MAC in June. Get switched over on 1st july - new broadband is soooo much better! Still getting billed by TalkTalk in August even though they haven't been my ISP for most of July!

I have found until recently Talk Talk very good but recently they have harassed me and made me feel pressure. I am a pensioner and being pressed for more and more money that I don't have is making me ill and I can't cope with it. I want a quiet simple time not a stressed one.

I have just asked Talk Talk for my MAC code and was told that I do not have a MAC code because I am on an MPS LLU connection. Talk Talk state that I do not require a MAC code to switch to another provider. Is this the case. Grateful for some advice.

After years of Hell with Tiscali, then TalkTalk, finally got round to finding another ISP, so requested my MAC via TT's online form. 3 days in, after no MAC, I emailed them to chase it up and was told I didn't need one because my phone and broadband were on a TT line. Not the case. My phone is with BT (through the Post Office). My new ISP (Zen - because it has UK call centres and Apple Mac tech support) confirmed, yes, I do need a MAC. So called TT and got through to London (if you choose the option to leave them, they'll answer you in the UK), but got the 'hard sell' to stay with them, which I politely refused. Then he got argumentative, saying my net outages were because I was using my own (new) router, then disputing I'd even requested the MAC in the 1st place. He said he couldn't find my incident reference and would have to raise a request from scratch. I wasn't having this, so asked to speak to his superviser, who admitted there was a mistake and yes, I do need a MAC, and has promised I'll get it within 2 days (they only have 2 left before I call Ofcom). But in the meantime I've had another "you don't need a MAC because..." from their other department. Beggars belief.

I have just requested a MAC Code from Talk Talk and after waiting to be answered I was asked all the usual questions like why was I leaving Talk Talk etc. I insisted on being given a MAC Code and was put on hold. Then I got cut off and had to go through the whole procedure again. Simple I thought as they had all my details from my last call.....NO I was asked by a young lady this time again, why I wanted to change ISP's. I pointed out that I had done all this before and just wanted the code. She asked if I had been through to technical support or would like to be. I refused and said I just wanted the Mac Code. She said I was being unfair for not letting them try to rectify the problem and would I like a new router. By this time I had totally lost it and said I had the right to change and I would contact OFCOM if she couldnt help me. I have now been told i will receive my MAC Code in 5 working days but i'm not convinced I will. All I can say is WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!!

Great experience. Requested my MAC yesterday morning and received it by email early evening. Cannot fault the service received from TT. Only moving from TT as we are at the distance limit of ADSL (regular disconnects and loss of service - with any ISP) and BT have rolled out Infinity to us.

No reply from email request online at talk talk website for mac code, when I called to get mac code they said all systems are down and I need to call back next day. But, they are still taking nw customers despite the system being down (2nd Aug 2011 7pm). Very unhelpful. Was with them for 5 years. Never again.

Have been with Tiscali for some years, and then taken over by Talk Talk, since when I think the service has declined gradually. I had the usual and expected struggle to persuade Talk Talk to give me a MAC code - which they eventually did, although it took 3 seperate calls to obtain this. Initial the MAC code didn't appear to work, but after discussion with BT all went well, and the transfer was then undertaken quickly and easily.

Terrible. Ofcom should act on what I judge to be wilful obstruction. I called early July promised it within 5 days. Nothing appeared in next 13 days. Called back "had no record of my request but would have it in less than 24 hours" It did not come. 2 days later I called a THIRD time and after 25 minutes and 2 attempts was given mac code. This is inertia marketing at its worst. I never signed up with talktalk having been a happy f2s customer for many years but the broadband became noticeably slow in recent months . So now 15 days+ after first request and having peed away 45 minutes of my life needlessly dealing with these sharks I would recommend everyone to stay well clear of TT rather than just being a mildly displeased ex customer

Hey Here is how to deal with TALK TALK and obtain your mac code: Call them every day .. log the calls as evidence; and after 5days of calls then do the following : 1: Call TALK TALK get throguh the automated call centre by pressing any button and ask to be sent to 'Customer Loyalty' ( poor choice of words but.. ) 2. Keep Calm and request your records of all calls brought up and repeat that you have requsted MAC code for 5 days and no reply. And that you will now having tried for 5days report to OFF COM and use them to obtain the code. 3. Pause and repeat clearly for it to sink in; that you will report them and have OFFCOM demand a MAC code on your behalf 4. Strangely a MAC code will then be made available after approx 2 minutes of waiting 5. If this does not provide a response, then report to OFFCOM tel: 03001233333 : but keep trying EVERY DAY .. regular ..

My husband has just rung talktalk for a MAC code and what a load of tosh he was told. The woman asked why he was moving? He replied found a cheaper provider, to which she asked what? So my husband told her the details, she then asked who he was moving to, he said 02 then she replied back with you do not need a MAC code. Well I am calling to 02 tomorrow see what they say, and believe me if we get told by 02 we do need one then I dread the person who argues with my husband on the phone tomorrow because he will not take any rubbish. Please can anybody tell me did you ever move provider without a MAC code. Much appreciated.

TT have no intention of giving you a MAC CODE without a fight, avoid this company at all cost. We have spent most of our day making calls between SKY which says that they need a MAC CODE to transfer services and TALK TALK who flatly refuse to give you a CODE, tell you that you do not need one or say that a code is not available for the package we are on as the Broadband is inclusive or all the services are together. Next move will be OFCOM but if they are getting all of these complaints about TT surely OFCOM are not doing a very good job. When you do finally get through to somebody who you think may help you they talk in Swahili and you cannot understand them. Yes SOUTH AFRICA they told us when asked where in the World they were based. Good Luck to anybody joining TT they do not care once your money starts rolling into their bank account.

Finally got my MAC code from TT after several attempts. The reason for sacking off TT? 2-3 days of obvious DNS Server issues which were initially explained away by first call to tech support like this: "There are engineers at your exchange working on the servers", and then on second call: "Your router model is known to be faulty and is also not supported". Miraculously of course, my 'faulty' router fixed itself after a couple of days, and I've yet to find out from TT what these mysterious servers do at my local exchange!

Trying to move fromTalk Talk to BT (phone & broadband). Migration should have been yestrday. Talk Talk did their bit and disconnected everything, but BT can't connect us as TT have refused to hand over the mac. I asked for my MAC code yesterday and it arrived today. They had good deals to offer me and if it weren't for switching due to my employer now providing me, I'd have been happy to accept. (I work for a comms company, and they are correct in saying it can take up to 5 working days)

orginally with Freedom 2 surf and for 3 years no trouble. However as soon as talk talk took over I started getting lots of problems. First was I kept getting disconnecting notices for non payment even though I had paid my bill and my credit card was fine. this went on for months and I got fed up with it and want to move as talk talk are the worst company I have ever delt with. BRING BACK FREEDOM2SURF I say

TalkTalk are shocking! I wish i had never signed up to a contract with them! They do not reply to e-mails, they cant speak proper English on the phone and they often just cut you off! They might be cheaper than their competitors, but the customer pays a heavy price elsewhere! 0/10 TalkTalk!

I have just switched TalkTalk to sky. Both companies told me a mac code was not needed and this has proved correct. Both helplines and email have been excellent. The only charge was £39 for a BT engineer to check my line (he fitted a new line house to pole and a double phone socket) Sky has been up and running for a week and is twice as fast as TalkTalk and always faster! Talktalk was between )0.4 Mbs and 2.8 Mbs (Usually about 1.5 Mbs.) download speed. Sky has so far always been at 3.25 Mbs. and it is still being monitored and tweeked. Upload speeds are about equal at 0.4 Mbs. All these speeds were after the new line had been fitted.

Fox, that's not a mac code, that's a mac address. 2 entirely different things. Mac code is for migrating broadband provider, Mac address is a physical address of your home networking components. Each PC, router etc has a different mac address. Sorry but you've wasted a great deal of time. If you wanted the mac code you don't have it. If you wanted a mac address then looking at the router would be the obvious place to start.

Having read some of the horror stories on here, I was dreading the process of getting a MAC key from TalkTalk. I phoned them last Thursday, (on 0870 4441820, free on my TT line) and had a very cordial chat with one of their staff. Sure she tried to get me to stay, offered me free line rental etc., but I just kept politely refusing (I'd already arranged to move telephone provider, so the fact that TT don't do Broadband only, may have helped). She promised that I would have a MAC key withing 5 days, and I prepared myself mentally for the battle ahead, got OFCOM's address ready, psyched myself up, marked day 5 on my calendar. Opened my email today, day 4, and there it was, everything I needed! MAC key, expiry date, explanation of what will happen next. What's all the fuss about? TalkTalk? Brilliant! (Mind you, I'm dumping them because they have shown themselves to be rubbish in so many other ways!!!). But perhaps, just maybe, they're getting their act together.

Put your request in writing, wait 5 days, if nothing raise a complaint. You probably wont get a response. Wait 8 weeks and file a complaint with http://www.ombudsman-services.org/communications.html No point fighting them, save your energy and bide your time.

If you have a TT wireless router, the mac code is stuck on the back on a long thin label. If you need to get it direct from TT, try getting through on phone to accounts. A senior supervisor answered and gave it to us right away! This was quite a shock, as over the years we have been through all the usual ghastly problems experienced by others, including trying for hours before the unexpected success. Keep pressing for a senior supervisor and note every name.

Talk Talk messed me around for ages, not answering emails and cutting me off when I phoned them. I finally got an answer saying that as I have line rental with them, they can't issue a MAC code. I'll have to ask Plusnet to take over the current line but as Plusnet have told me that can't do this, Talk Talk says I will have to connect to a new BT line and have Plusnet activate the new line and then ask TT to cancel their line. Is this a come on to put me off? Or is it correct and will it cost a lot of money?

I asked for a MAC code after Talk Talk told me (quite incorrectly) that my PC needed "clearing out" if I wanted a speed faster than 0.5 mbs - this to cost £109. The code took 12 days to arrive and almost immediately after my speed went up to a quite unprecedented 2.6 mbs.

I'd been with Talk Talk was then Tiscali for over 7 years so no outstanding contract. I phoned TT for MAC code & informed them I was leaving, got cut off first call. Second call said they'd email & post code, it didn't arrive. Two weeks on phoned again another week & I did receive my MAC code. But my main point here is: "When you finally get MAC & migrate to new ISP TT will still try & bill you every month, although they are no longer providing the service that's cancelled. So watch out & cancel your Talk Talk DD. I'm still waiting for them to close my account after emails, calls & now letter."

I have made two requests for an MAC code and five days have passed without any response. My decision to change ISP was because I rang talk talk's technical help line as I was getting a very slow connection. I had difficulty understanding the man I spoke to but eventually realised he wanted £109 to "clean" my computer which he said was the cause of the problem.

i purchased tiscali 3 years ago, then when i was moving home about 2 months ago i found out that tiscali was now trading as talk talk. i requested to change my current broadband package to another home, a month later i still had no internet in my new home. i phoned about 4 times everyday for about a week, i still received the SAME advice from everyone (who could hardly speak a word of english), so i requested a mac code 2 weeks ago to switch to bt, they said they will send the mac code to my home and also send it to my talktalk email account, i still have had no reply.

Talk Talk won't give me my mac code & kept telling me that they would email it to me in 5 working days. But then never asked my name or any details, just hung up on me. I requested MAC code from TalkTalk last month, by email, via My Account - it's there, it just takes a bit of time to find it! (Stated I didn't want to discuss.) Code arrived within 5 days and connection to BT went smoothly - except that BT hub was 2 days late arriving! (I reconnected to old modem.) TalkTalk still let me access latest bill today showing 21p in credit. I phoned today to confirm position before I cancelled direct debit. Good luck everyone!

Have just applied to get a MAC code after 6 or 7 years with TT (joined when they said BB would be free, never was!!) The lady I spoke to tried very hard to keep me about 25 mins worth of offerings and finally tried to bribe me with a reconditioned router because it was as close as though could get to the free N.router BT are offering! Having read a lot of the posts below I have no faith in me getting the code in the next 5 days. Will let you know.

Won't bother to go through the wasted emails and the phone calls......here is how to do it. Go to the offcom website and get the mac request letter. cut and paste into an email to TT I used to have a nildram service so I needed to use customerservices@talktalkbusiness.co.uk After 5 days call them, quote time and date of the 1st email and point out that the ofcom regulations say they have to provide withitn 5 days and that you know they can do it over the phone. Be prepared to be passed around, 1 spoke the 4 different people and it took 1/2 an hour but (stick to the script) in the end I got a MAC code. Good luck

I've been very disappointed with service since talktalk took over freedom2surf and, having read other comments here, expected trouble. I filled in their online "ask a question" form as mentioned in their FAQs. As with Sarah G, I then received a reply suggesting I should phone them to discuss my service. I replied to that message saying I would only get in touch with them once I'd received my MAC code. The code turned up with no further contact, 24 hours later! I don't know whether I was just lucky or whether being forewarned by all your other comments helped - suspect the latter - thanks everyone!

Tried via email and got a snotty email back saying it was impossible to generate a mac code as the broadband was 'ceasing'. Spoke to a woman at TT who said that she would start generating it and it would take 5 working days. She would email me and it would also be sent by letter. Watch this space is all I say...

Emailed and asked for MAC, waited three working days and phoned, told it would be another two working days as they didn't have to do it any faster! Waited another three and phoned again. After a ten minute wait I was connected and asked to be provided with the MAC immediately as they are legally obliged to do. After a few seconds shilly-shallying, it was read out over the phone and I've just used it successfully. Be firm - they DO have the number and they CAN read it out to you.

Applied on the 15th March and was told a minimum of 5 working days ... I politely corrected to a maximum of 5 working days ...... Waited till the time was up ... no email, so chased it up with a formal email quoting Ofcom and then a phone call ....... I was then given the MAC code via the phone! Think they gave up when they realised that price was not the issue ( I am paying a £ or so more for better speeds/service) Be here I come ;-)

I take it back, after the nice girl Sarah not hassling me to stay with Talk Talk - she didn't bother to put through my request for MAC code. I called on Saturday as 5 days had passed and I hadn't received it. The guy on Saturday said he'd put my request through but I'm going to call again today to verify that he has done that. They are buying themselves time, absolute jokers. Now I know I have DEFINITELY made the correct choice moving away from them.

SIGH! Emailed them for a MAC code. Got a reply saying the MAC was on its way, but I could call them to discuss my service. Declined to call, waited another day, then got an email from them saying that we hadn't spoken in a while and maybe I could get a better service (wouldn't have spoken in a while as I moved a few weeks before... my company was taken over by Talk Talk... fools). The email said the MAC was on its way. Then today I get an email saying that as I haven't responded to other messages, they've cancelled my request. ARGH! I hadn't responded as what I wanted was "on its way" and not associated by the things they were trying. How dare they cancel my request!

Had 3 phone calls now with TT. Service is shockingly poor. First woman we spoke to and could hardly understand her, she was VERY RUDE and did not help. She refused to give us a mac code then after 5 minutes of arguing said she would send it in the post and that would be with us after 5 working days. 2 weeks later and still nothing has come in through the post. 2nd call was first thing this morning, got through to a nice adviser who explained that we were in a LLU upgraded area and thus did not need a mac code if we were to change our service charger. I eventually took no for an answer, even though a member of BT staff was standing next to me saying that a MAC code was still needed. We checked through this site and rang back just now. The man that we spoke to just then, said that no mac code exists because of this LLU upgrade. He has given me the details of OFCOM to ring up and have it explained to me by then. To those who want to ring OFCOM the number i have been given is 0300 123 33 33. As this is on a saturday i will have to wait until monday to ring them. I will ring OFCOM on monday and post back with the results.

Talk Talk told me I couldn't have a Mac code for switching to Sky. Said something about me having a BT line which would mean if I cancelled my Talk Talk I would still have to pay BT for my line rental. They then offered my £5 a momnth discount to stay with Talk Talk Boradband and maybe just buy Sky TV only. To be honest it was very difficult to understand her as she reeled everything off so quickly but left me thinking I wasnt able to switch. I looked at the options re just having SKy TV only and it would cost me more a month this way. I spoke to Sky and they told me Talk Talk had given me incorrect Info. Then I found this site with all this feedback and now know what a bunch of liers Talk Talk are. Sky have assured me I can have my line rental with them and dont have to pay BT. I have ordered Sky TV, Broadband and Phone now and they are going to give me a new Mac Code and take care of everything for me. I'm still a bit nervous and hope it all goes smoothly and I dont end up paying 2 lots of line rental. I will come back and give more feedback when it's installed

I 1st requested my MAC code from TalkTalk on 4/1/11 after experiencing poor connection (they were not helpful in dealing with this) and having my monthly direct debit increased without being informed. This request in itself was not easy; the first person I spoke to tried very hard to talk me into staying with the company and then cut me off when he realised this was not going to happen. Anyway, the code did not appear within the 5 working days and I had to chase it for two weeks. It eventually arrived on 21/1/11, I called it through to my new provider only to be contacted a couple of days later and told that this code was invalid. I called TalkTalk again, they said they'd text and send a new one. The text never came; the next person I spoke to said that they don't text codes and I must have imagined this. The 'new' code was sent to me on a letter dated 10/2/11; unfortunately it wasn't a 'new' one and it said on the letter that it expired on 9/2/11. More phone calls................eventually (on 16/2/11) I got a working code and now have better connection but after reporting TalkTalk to Ofcom and moving forward with my complaint. I have heard from countless people that TalkTalk withold MAC codes. If they should legally send them with 5 working days why are they continually getting away with this?

Called on 26th Feb. explained I wanted my MAC code as continually having drop in internet connection, again put across to technical helpline and on the phone for 38mins changing various setings on my PC, told it would be emailed to me in 2 days. No email. Called again today at 11.45am and explained I had already requested my MAC code, all the usual lengthy security checks and holding while they supposedly check the details which they have checked a dozen times before with you, will call me back in 20 mins. 3.5hrs later I called them, the code will now be emailed to me in another 5 days, I wait in anticipation. Very polite on the end of the phone but customers service and satisfaction is ZERO!!

Think an update is in order. Got my MAC today and am moving away from these idiots. It's 2 days over due but then again I cant complain, TALKTALK wouldn't listen anyway. For anyone who is having problems getting a code I found a nicely worded template letter from Ofcom (link below) which seems to have done the trick either that or the irate letter I mailed them. It also appears that you need to make a formal request i.e. Mail to their customer service department or by postal letter DON'T bother with phone calls you'll get passed around the company Ofcom MAC code template http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/files/2010/03/MAC-request.pdf

Tried 0800 049 0049 and just got passed around and ended up on endless hold. TT don't seem to have the ability to retain customers by providing a decent service so have to resort to what are clearly deliberate measures to prevent dissatisfied customers from obtaining a MAC Code... rather pathetic really. OFTEL should be investigating. Another previously very happy f2s customer.

After playing "transfer the customer around the company" only to be transferred to the first number I dialled, I decided I'd had enough. So I tried to search on their site for "MAC code" and again nothing. If a business has to make it as difficult to get a simple MAC code from them I don't hold out much hope for any quality of service let alone expecting a MAC code off them. Going by the other comments it seems the majority and not the minority way of dealing with customers. I'm going to OFTEL stopping payments until they provide me with one and recommending anyone who asks for a recommendation to steer away from this lot. Its a shame because the freedom2surf have been faultless for the last two years.

Have read of much angst and dissatisfaction here. I must be leading a charmed life. I asked for a MAC on Fri - told the guy not to bother trying to retain me and he said ok and dealt with my request. It was sent to me on Sun and has worked as required today. Can't complain about that in fact I think acknowledgement of a good service is in order.

Just had the same experience Talk Talk are refusing to give us the mac code, apparently our broadband service is supplied through a full Local Loop Unbundling package, however OFCOM say they should remove the tag from the line but TT are being very unhelpful this is the worst customer service ever, we are leaving because the connection is awful and keeps dropping they are trying to make it impossible to leave.

Have requested Mac mac code from TalkTalk today after a week of having no outgoing phone thanks to 'billing problem' caused by the migration of old Tiscali customers (us)A migration that seems to have been happening since the dawn of time. Have spent most of the week on the phone to them, been told a different pack of lies as to why we cannot phone out (it automatically connects to them)and today were told it would take another 5 days to get us unblocked. Asked for mac code, as service is appauling for both phone and increasingly slow broadband (if you can connect at all), they never find your incident logs, never respond to emails and then have the audacity to speak to you as if you are five. Was put through to increasingly desperate sales monkey who offered us discounts, free months, compensation and planets on sticks; but we are not interested. Even getting her to say she'd organise a mac code took 45 minutes - I don't hold out much hope of getting a code any time this century. Given that she had 45 minutes to desperately fight for our business, TalkTalk are clearly losing customers faster than Ratner, and serves them right.

I have currently been trying to get my maccode from TalkTalk from October 2010 but have constantly been thrown around. After holding on the line for sometimes like 30 minutes they would transfer me to a line requesting that I leave a message and someone will get back to me, that of which I did over and repeatedly. I am currently on the phone and have been waiting for 23 minutes now and still not getting anywhere.

Been trying for over a month to get a mac code from Talk Talk. Firstly I was told system was done ring back in a few days. When I did I was passed from department to department and eventually after being left on hold for ages I gave in. The next time to be fair I was offered £20 off to stay with them till Jan 24th (2 weeks away) and they promised to ring back then. They didn't and neither has the deduction been applied. Finally last week they agreed to send the mac code. 5 working days later still to arrive in either of the 3 formats it was promised in. Appalling!!!!

Been with Tiscali for years with no problems. Decided to move to move to BT, who have the line, as Tiscali/Talk Talk speeds now poor and dropping out completely. Talk Talk simply failing to give me a MAC code. Requested on 13th Jan., told 5 days (no code), still no code (25th Jan.). Complaints and threats to refer to Oftel being ignored. Take my advice - do not use Talk Talk under any circumstances.

Called the carphone warehouse contact number. Selected option to move from talk talk. Rep tried the sell of trying to keep me to stay. I responded to ALL questions why with 'Please provide a MAC code for service transfer' - I was VERY direct. After seeing she was getting nowhere she agreed to send the MAC code by snail mail. 14 days later - no MAC code. Just called and their 'thinking of leaving talk talk' line could not accept more calls! Redialled and selected the 'existing issues' department. Requested MAC code which was immediately provided over the phone. Moral of the story - be direct and firm

As a former Tiscali customer I'm about to leave TT because of their awful service. I then went on this forum and after reading through, braced myself... however, at 9:45am I just received my MAC via text and email!! This goes to prove that they CAN provide it quicker than 5 days. Xmas Eve I cancelled my TV service, 2 hours later lost broadband connection. Rang TT jumped through hoops but couldn't get connection. An engineer came out a week later. He jumped through hoops, changed the router and nothing. Four phone calls later, he finds out I'm being migrated and won't get internet until 21 Jan! WTF! I rang to cancel my account and asked for a mac code. I was told it would be sent within five days. She couldn't text or email it to me. Waited a week, rang up today only to find that they hadn't' issued one. Instead they promise to try to get me reconnected within 24-48 hours. I asked again for the code and within an hour it was texted to me. I miss Homechoice!

Had rather lengthy argument with technical advisor from Talk Talk regarding MAC Code. Totally refused to give it - doesn't exist? How the hell am I typing this from my hopme PC if I haven't need for one then? Glad to see the back of Talk Talk, had nothing but trouble since I joined them. Spoke with UK based advisor from Sky. Gotta Say what a difference, should never have gone with Talk Talk or "No Talk" as I referred to them due to my lack of service for the first three months of being with them. I am moving to BE from TT because they can offer me faster broadband from my local exchange. I phoned TT on Monday after signing up with BE to ask for a Mac code. The chap I spoke to was polite and of course tried to persuade me to stay but I wanted the fast broadband so insisted on being sent a Mac code. I was assured I would receive it by email within 5 days. It is now Friday and nothing has arrived. I phoned this morning and was told that they had a note on their system that a Mac code could not be generated. The customer services adviser said there was no reason attached. He apologised for the delay and said he would escalate it to the next level and that I will receive a response within 24 hours. We'll see! I expressed my disappointment that they hadn't contacted me to explain and added that I hoped that this wasn't obstructionism on their part. He assured me it wasn't. Again, we'll see. So far then TT haven't fulfilled their obligations.

just to add to the confusion -our bb with tiscali and phone tt although had discussed transferring bb to talk talk bundle with 14 days cooling off period - so bb should still be with tiscali for another 13days surely however i kept being told they were all the same company now so my bb now with tt.my 4th call go me through to a tiscali agent & he advised i would have my mac code in 5wds. well lets wait and see. however he also said that talk talk tiscali still use bt lines!confused yeah me too- why was i being told that i would have to transfer back to bt first before changing provider if i wanted to keep my own tel number, incurring all the expense of course?. yes you've guessed its all part of the blackmail process in which they try to keep their existing customers and the agent i spoke to agreed with that. OFCOM should be on this already shouldnt they. i think it is awful that they also put their staff through this nonsense and make them give false information oh i mean lie, or as they would say- a training issue!! i could go on further but wont bore you anymore. anyone else in this position then try tiscali 0845077448 you never know you might get someone who knows what they are talking about & if they are the same company now they might be able to help with tt - they certainly need someone to. . . . . . .

I have been trying to get a Mac code from Talk Talk for nearly a month, each time am told they couldnt give it to me over the phone, i do not have e-mail as it never worked from the time we signed up for it with talk talk, they are unhelpful and agressive! My line has now been turned off by talk talk and i have been using another person phone to try to obtain the Mac code incurring costs. Still no mac code and no phone line, an very upset and will never go back to talk talk! Think Ofcom is the only option left.

I have been ring up three times, still can't get my MAC code> They said my broadband is inclusive, is free. So I didn't get my MAC. But my bill still pay nearly 50 pound per month. BT keep ask me my MAC> Now I got phone line but didn't have broadband. What can I do?

It took me 25 minutes to get my MAC code from TT. The advisor was rude, patronising and agressive. He was determined to stick to his script, and 'prove me wrong'. The entire experience was stressful, twice I asked to be put through to a supervisor, but he just put me on hold each time. BT told me that TT can generate a MAC code within 2 hours and text it to you. TT said BT are liars! However, they did text it to me in less than an hour. Dreadful people!

I phoned the 0800 number and they tell me I've a fully unbundled line so don't need an mac code. They are telling me I need to contact BT and have my line switched back to them before I can join sky. Is this true and how much is going to cost me and how long might this take please?

All broadband suppliers say that TalkTalk must provide a Mac code. TalkTalk read a script that says because you are on a TalkTalk network you do not need a Mac code to migrate. Mac codes are only for BT lines I find this frustrating that there will be additional cast and a time delay between switching back to a BT land line and new BB supplyer

I have spent 3 weeks trying to get a MAC code from talktalk. The last call they told me their server was down and I would have to call back - when I asked to speak to a higher manager the servers mysteriously came back on line and they said I'd get it in 5 working days - they must only work 1 day a week as I'm still waiting... next stop ofcom.

I have tried several times to obtain my MAC code from talktalk. First I was persuaded that talktalk could definitely solve my problem and to give them 5 more days. Nothing happened. Two weeks later I rang again and asked for my MAC code. I was told the system was down and I had to phone back in three days. Three days later I rang and was eventually told I have no MAC code and that they could definitely fix my problem. I only want my MAC code!!!!

I firstly requested a MAC code via e-mail but no surprise whe I didnt get a response. I then rang TT and eventually got through. After numerous attempts to persuade me to stay with TT the operator agreed to send me my MAC code within 5 days via both email AND a text message. Of course after nearly 2 weeks I had heard nothing so I rang them back quoting the ref number I had been given for my previous request only to be told there was no such record of me calling !!! So once again I went through another 10 minutes of drivel before I was was assured my MAC code would be sent within 5 days. When asked why they couldnt give me it over the phone I was informed they didnt generate them and they had to send a request off to another company. Well that was 9 days ago and Im still wating for it ! Talk Talk are USELESS !!!!!!!!!!

Just called TalkTalk and had a pain free experience requesting MAC. A massive difference from my previous experience with Carphone Warehouse and not what i expected. Guy was polite, sure he tried to get me to change my mind but that is his job after all, and whole process done in less than 5 minutes. Good to see that sustomer service has improved shame about the connection speed.

Called TalkTalk on 0800 049 0049 as John did below as I wanted to bundle our calls with broadband (TT only supplying the broadband). They offered me several alternatives to going (unfortunately I'm in a phone contract elsewhere or I'd have taken it) but when I said it couldn't be done gave me a MAC code by text message within a few minutes. Really helpful and I'm sorry to see them go. I've had other issues with them in the past but by and large if your patient and polite, they tend to deal with any problems as best they can.

First called talktalk on a sunday evening, I was on hold for 4 or 5 mins, then a chap from tech support was very polite and told me I'd have to call between 08:00 and 20:00. After reading comments on here, as I'm an LLU customer, I went to BT.com and used their web site to migrate my phone service back to BT. I'll probably be without broadband for a few weeks, but that it preferable to the hassles many people here have reported.

I have just tried to get a MAC code from TalkTalk so we can switch everything over to Sky but TT said that as we are on a fully unbundled network we do not need a MAC code. Is this right? I told the lady that Sky had told us we need a MAC code but she said that that just shows that Sky don't know what they are doing!! She wouldn't give me one. Is she right or do i just phone up (for the third time) and demand one? Thanks in advance

I have had a dispute with TT since i went with them in March 2010 i.e. they offred free broadband then couldnt provide it. After countless calls and e mails i was put throught to the CEO office and given 3 months to decide if i wanted to stay with them. Yesterday i decided i wanted a better service and requested a MAC code due to there breach of contract. I have now received a MAC code within 24 hours. Never again will i return to TT. hope you all get better luck in future.

Rang TT to get my MAC code, to be told they would disconnect me straight away!!! After around 10 mins of arguing with them and telling them that this would not be the case, finally agreed to send me my mac code by e mail withhin 5 days. Would not give to me over telephone. Found this site today so called them back and said still not received e mail. Very nice and polite girl on phone said it had been e mailed yesterday to me. Checked my e mail whilst on the phone and surprisr, surprise NO E MAIL. Explained all this and Wooooo Hooooooo !!! She gave me my MAC code there and then over the phone. Why they couldnt do that in the first place???? Who knows??!!! Stay away from TT, they are a bunch of cowboys!!!! Hope this helps other people with same problems!!!

hi all, after reading this page i was not looking forward to hunting my mac code from talk talk. however i phoned the o800 number and it went to car phone warehouse then went to talk talk. the guy was very friendly joked with me and spent about 3mins telling me other internet providers would not make my connection faster as its my bt line, best he said he could do was 2 mths free,i said i would like my mac code anyway, took my details and even gave me a number proving i had called them asking for it. 1hr past and had it in an email 2hrs and got it in a text. i had no promlems maybe im lucky but just wanted to leave feedback hope this helps.

I was told that I don't need a MAC code although I am going to BT and BT say I do. I only signed up for BT today but it seems that you have to have everything in order to arrange a smooth switchover i.e. don't rely on BT or talktalk to sort it. I wonder how I will get on?

Took 2 attempts to get mac code, 1st guy just said yeah no probs will be with u within 5 workin days easy peasy!(2good2be True) Well I waited & waited. Then found this site & went in guns blazin in the politest of ways, got put on hold several times whilst the operator was goin thru his script tryin 2 convince me 2 stay. In fairness he was trying to help and i would of appreciated it if he didnt have such a stinkin, condiscending attitude. I let him get away with it for a bit but after continually talkin over me I pulled out the big guns & he buckled! After he gave me the 5 workin days ramble i told him that i was aware that he could give it 2 me there & then. He said that wasn't possible & 2 check the OFCOM website so i agreed and insisted i took his name, he refused and asked why so i told him "When i dont get my mac code withim 5 days I shall be puttin it in writin to your company along with your name as a reference to complain" (5mins of polite ranting and relayin my rights as a consumer) he gave me a call ref. no. but the best part is i put the phone down and settled in for the wait & within 30secs my mob went nuts! 15 messages from talktalk givin me my mac code! I think i upset him! But i was happy! Good times lol morale of the story never give up! Persistance is the key to success!(& MacCode.org.uk of course!)

Tried to obtain MAC code, phoned the Talk Talk customer service number. No surprise, they put me on hold, until I got fed up. Oh my goodness! TalkTalk are the total bane of my life at the minute!!! We have been having problems with TalkTalk internet, i.e. it never worked, (dont even talk to me about the customer service in that department!!! grrr) so decided to switch to BT. The BT people said I need a MAC code, so I dutifully rang TalkTalk who said the MAC code would be with me in 5 days, marvellous.............. 3 days later I rang again to check the status, they said it was pending, just wait a couple of days............... 7 days later (after BT emailing me every 5 minutes asking for it!) it still hasnt arrived! So, I rang TalkTalk again who looked through their records and said a request for a MAC code had never been placed!!! Tried very hard to keed my cool on the phone, which is very difficult when they insist on talking to quickly and quietly so I cant understand them. They have estimated another 5 days. Yeah right!!! Whatever you do, DONT USE TALKTALK!!! I have wasted so much of my life on stinking hold to these idiot drones!!! They may be cheap but there is a reason for that! They are AWEFUL!!!!!

I asked for a MAC code on the 7th June - the first day my BB service with Talk Talk went live and they screwed up. It took around 5 hours to fix a simple problem. 14th June - still no MAC code. To cut a long story short I found that this number: 0870 444 1820 - gleaned from the TT website gets you through to what I think is a call centre in Eire (they all seem to have Irish accents). I phoned them yesterday and was promised a MAC code by mid-day today 16th June. No show on the e-mail by 12 so rang them again and got the code within 10 minutes - confirmation by e-mail 5 minutes after that. I had to lean on them a little - politely though. I think the Indian call centre they use is one of the main problems. I'm switching to Zen internet & back to BT for my phone because I just don't trust Talk Talk after the hassle they've given me. BTW I have been told that the reason for TT speed variability is that they use a "traffic shaping" system which has the effect of capping your connection speed. I can't verify this but it does ring true given my experience. Talk Talk are poisoning their own brand with their shambolic stupidity. Seems to be a case of trying to expand to fast in order to gain market momentum or something. Just avoid them or leave if you can.

I called talktalk 5th June and was given a mac code (it turned out to be wrong). I have been trying to get through again since then for the correct code and find someone who could help. Have been given the run around and the last person I spoke to on the 10th said she would have to email the original person I spoke to on the 5th, in order to get the mac code. Was promised a call back to let me know what was going on, but this never happened. Have now written a letter to their correspondence department cancelling all services and demanding a mac code and also cc'd Ofcom. We'll see what happens but I don't hold out much hope.

Hi, I have decided to go to BT for my calls and broadband after two years of Talk Talk. I was told by BT I would need a MAC code so tried to phone Talk Talk. After waiting for 20 mins on the phone I gave up and googled for help! Found this site and did a bit of digging based on the info here. I went on samknows.com and found my exchange. If it doesn't appear in the exchange list go to the links in the left side menu, choose Talk Talk from there and then click on their list of exchanges-brings up all of them! I found my exchange which confirmed Talk Talk had LLU on there (and I checked my talk talk bill to confirm that I was getting free broadband). I then phoned BT,told them about the LLU on my exchange and they confirmed that I didn't need a MAC code. Hope this is of help to anyone who might else be hanging on a phone for hours trying to reach talk talk.

We've been with tiscali since last year and then got changed to TalkTalk at some point. During the last couple of months, the broadband connection had become incredibly slow in the evening, normal sites like amazon.co.uk loaded slower than on dial-up. Speedtest.net gave us 5 Mb/s, but the problem was to get this site loaded in the first place. We had TalkTalk technicians calling us twice and putting us on 'other profiles', but none of them worked out. They didn't bother to call us back a third time, so we requested the MAC this morning under their cancellation phone number. Within 5 minutes after ending the conversation, we received the MAC by mail and text message. We phoned BT straight away and signed up with them. We had to pay the fees with TalkTalk until July when the contract ended. Seems like a smooth process for us....

I tried ringing Talk Talk a fair few times over the last 24 hours and no matter what menu option I tried taking I was constantly put on hold. Occasionally I got told my call would be answered within one minute.... still on hold 20 mins later. Steadily getting angrier, I might add, by the inane hold music. Anyone would think it's designed to irritate so you hang up. Finally I got through to general broadband enquires and requested my MAC code. The operator claimed that the Cancellations Team weren't working this weekend, and that I'd have to call back on Monday morning to resolve the problem. Knowing this to be utter BS I tried the main talk talk number again... and.... HURRAH... spoke to a real person at 1105 Sunday morning. I raised the "Cancellations Team not working" statement with him, and after sounding taken aback he trotted out the "I can't comment on what someone else has said" line. "Give me my MAC code and I'll forget about it", I pleaded. 10 mins later and after several repititions of "I'm not interested in your special offers" I obtained what I was looking for and it should arrive shortly by letter, text and email. Talk Talk: Wonderful for inducing high blood pressure, stress, extreme irritation and high phone bills.

Phoned TalkTalk on the 27th of April 10, for my Mac code i was told it would be emailed to me within 5 days, still havn't received, so i've been on the phone again for 45mins (to a retard i think !) explaining i was leaving TalkTalk and wanted my Mac code, she explained i did not need a Mac code...she said she was going to transfer me to tech support because of the problems i have been having with my broadband. I explained i did not want transfering about ten times but she still transfered me...they couldn't give me a mac code....so they tranfered me. Then once again i have been told i do not need a mac code...NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT.

TalkTALK is a disgusting crooked company. They cancelled my direct debit and then cut me off giving lame excuses one after the other and at the moment I do n't have a phone line or internet access for past 2 weeks. They are fixing my line problem. Also BT engineers came to fix the line but simply wasted time and then left. Rather than fix the line they simply killed their time by sitting in BT open reach vans.

Having read the experiences of others I am determined to move from Talk Talk. I have been trying for 4 weeks to obtain a Mac Code. My problems seem to parallel others, the main complaint is it keeps dropping out. I am one of the people who were taken over from Tiscali and seem just to be taken for granted, I am moving!

priviously with tiscali the transfered to talk talk. very very poor customer service. After paying for bill each month myself via my account talk talk decided to take the money themselves without having a direct debit. Shocking staff Requested my mac code waited 45 minutes still no answer attemted 2 more times code was then due to be sent but still waiting almost 3 weeks later. Do not use this provider they are very very unprofessional

Talktalk are giving me the runaround. I wrote asking for a code, then followed it up with a telephone request, then a second and then a third, all without sucess even though i received a letter from talktalk suggesting they would give one over the phone. the agents all agree to request it, but nothing comes through.

A mac code can only be issued to a customer on ip stream broadband (chargeable) If you are reciving free borabd (LLU) you will not have a mac code. You will be able to transfer to another provider and take up broadband with them.. Check the LLU section on this page it wil confirm thee above..

I asked for a MAC code from Tiscali who said I would get it within 5 waorkings days, suprise surprise nothing I have called them only to find out that although the MAC code was requested they cancelled my broadband, is there no way a MAC code can be asked for retrospectively especially if the line is still tagged for tiscali. Does anyone have a clue!!

Having got a MAC code from TalkTalk / Tiscali at the beginning of January (because of the increase in charges for no additional benefit), I opened an account, using the MAC with Plusnet. Now TalkTalk claim the MAC code was not used (even though my service transitioned seamlessly a few days after opening the PlusNet account), and THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO BILL ME FOR A SERVICE THEY ARE NO LONGER PROVIDING! I am having to jump through hoops to prove to them that I have a contract with PlusNet before they will refund me.

I was with Tiscali, got a letter saying if I did;nt take up talk plan my monthly payments would go up from 14.99 to 19.99, told them not happy, after a lot of calls, told them to forget it and asked for Mac code, got this on 16.12.09 told new provider who said we would be active with them from 23.12. All ok, however Tiscali/TalkTalk now wont refund me the 8 days they owe me as they say the MAC code was not used.......new provider said it is...ongoing emails with Tiscali/TalkTalk as I write...

I have attempted 3 times to get a MAC code now. I requested one using their contact page on the 10th Jan, after not recieving one I called again on (around) the 20th Jan (25 mins on hold) and was told that because I was going through an 'upgrade' (which I was being forced to do to bring me in line with talk talk's product line) they could not give me one until the 26th. I attempted to argue the point that it was not my problem and that for them to keep within the industry guideine 5 days this should be issued immediatly. Funnily enough I got cut off. Will call back on the 26th and will make sure I get it this time!

Called Talk Talk today to ask for MAC code as they have just taken over from tascali and increased my bill for £14.99 to £18.48 with no additional benefit. I am absolutely disgusted with Talk Talk/Tiscali. I have been on hold for over an hour to cancel my internet and calls and I still have broadband on my line as they are incompotent and useless! They have cancelled my account but have still left a service on my line, when I phone up the number given for internet services the option tells me to ring the number I am ringing!! AARRRGGHHH!!!! This is the reason why I am leaving and have no intention of returning! At least BT answer your calls and give you advice from people who can understand the internet! Absolutely terrible service!

Been with Tiscali for 3 years paying £11.99 a month. With no problems. Talktalk (who now own Tiscali) have suddenly bumped up my bill by 50% to £14.99. (My line will only support 512KB so 8MB will not happen so don't see the point in paying for a service I won't get!) Opted to migrate to BT. Had to ring Talktalk for a second time as the first call failed when I was redirected to the MAC code department then just rang and rang till the phone cut off. Second phone call was successful and after the operator had tried to sell me larger and larger packages finally forwarded my request for my MAC code. Arrived by E-mail within one hour.

I have had a short but bad experience with TalkTalk & in particular their so called 'help service' which is why I am changing supplier. However, when I phoned to request my MAC code I got a very helpful person who said that because they operate an LLU service, a MAC code isn't needed. I questioned this and was passed to someone in their technical support & even when pressed, he was adamant that I did not need the code. I then spoke to the technical help people at my new Broadband supplier (Utility Warehouse)& he confirmed that TalkTalk were correct - I did not need a MAC code from TalkTalk. So - I think unfortunately it is pot luck who you get to speak to with all of these companies but despite my intense dislike for TalkTalk they were correct & very helpful in this instance.

I called at 15.45 on Mon 2nd November to request a MAC. I was told it would be e-mailed to me within 72 hours. Surprise, surprise nothing arrived. I rang back and was provided with it directly. I firmly believe it would never have been sent if I hadn't rung back, they are just trying to make it difficult in the hope that people will give up and therefore not transfer their business.

Im leaving TalkTalk after nearly 3 years with them. The reason I am leaving was noting that my monthly bill was steadily increasing from an average of £22 and now seems to be costing me closer to £30. This increase recently climbed above my budget and caused the direct debit to fail, my phone and internet was immediatly switched off. I rang them, made the payment of the balance from my credit card and the service was re-connected. The month later, TalkTalk attempted to recover BOTH last months (already paid on card) and this months which again exceeded my budget and caused the direct debit to fail again. I also notice they had tried to charge me 2 x £7.50 for 2 failed direct debits on top of everything else and once again they disconnected my phone and bb. Until this recent experience I had previously enjoyed the free broadband and calls and had no immediate service issues. I have now fcuked them off completly and switched to bt for the line and sky for the calls, bb and tv. As for the MAC code, this was not needed as BT simply took the line back from talktalk. Once this happens the line is clear from tags and you will not need a MAC code to join another supplier. However they are still cabable of generating a MAC code and OFCOM (not oftel ??) make this a legal requirement that it is supplied within 5 days of making the request.

As a communications advisor, I am often told that Talk Talk will not provide customers with a mac code because they say they are not needed as they have llu line, this does not make a difference we still legaly need a Mac Code from the provider by law (this is for the customers saftey) this makes it both frustrating for the poor customers that have had the trouble but the advisors to. Please be insistant with talk talk when asking for a mac code they legally have to give it to you with in 5 days either by post over the phone or email.

My two cents once again, TalkTalk don't provide Mac on the grounds that they can't. That is correct. Tell BT when signing up to add a note or something to tell them you are on a LLU line and Bt will take it over with no hassle.

(12/04/2009 12:43:04)
Dear all people requesting Mac Codes from TalkTalk. When signing up for broadband under TalkTalk they operate a service called LLU. LLU stands for Local Loop Unbundling which for the non-technical just means that TalkTalk install their own equipment in your local exchange. TalkTalk simply disconnect your line(s) from the host (old provider) and reconnect them to their own services. Many companies use BT services under openreach and only partially disconnect your line which makes the process alot easier. TalkTalk may not connect you to their own hardware if it is not presently available at your exchange. To find out whether they would have diconnected you visit www.samknows.com or give TalkTalk a call and ask them. Here is a small list of LLU providers: If TalkTalk have connected your line to the LLU unbundle process you can't retrieve ANY Mac codes as ofcom haven't yet established a LLU arrangement. The hardware TalkTalk uses is very similar to BT so switching back to BT should be a breeze. Contact BT broadband and phone sales as you will require a BT line the number for sales is 0800 800 150. Sign up for their service and tell them to add a notice to your account for the engineers and support team that you are on a LLU unbundled service and you don't require a Mac code according to Ofcom regulations. - Only tell them if you are 100% certain you are. By adding that the staff should be made aware of your situation and not nag you to death over why you need a Mac code, as believe me.... They Do. If your problems persit with BT contact their headquarters. Number on saynoto0870.com

You people do not understand how the system works. If you have free broadband then you CAN'T get a MAC. The reason being that MACs are used to transfer between providers using BTs exchange equipment. If you have free broadband with TalkTalk then you are not using BTs exchange equipment therefore there is no MAC to generate. Your line would need to be reconnected to BT equipment before you can use any other supplier, BT will want to put you in a contract, even if only for line rental. Once you are connected to BT again then you can join whoever you want for broadband without the need for a MAC. Check the Ofcom Website for information regarding MACs and LLU (LLU is the reason you can get free broadband). I use TalkTalk broadband without any issues at all. By the way there is no such thing as Oftel. There is Ofcom and Otelo.

Hi If you are on the free broadband product. Your line will be on Talktalk exchange equipment. You do not need a mac code. Just go back to bt for your line rental and you can go to another broadband provider, most bb providers require bt line rental anyway. Mac codes are for broadband providers that run of BT exchange equipment. The free broadband from talktalk does not run on this so you dont need one. Customers who pay talktalk an extra 15 pounds a month for bb, are on bt exchange equipment their broadband is being resold from bt wholesale. - so a mac code can be generated. I hope this helps you. Talktalks system is called LLU there is nothing illegal about this they do not steal broadband from other suppliers. If you do go to talktalk read your letters the first welcome letter advises you to ring your previous supplier to advise you are going to TalkTalk.

My wife phoned TT a month ago to get the mac code, as an ex employee she knew the right numbers to ring and did it in her old branch. A month went by and nothing so I rang sky who said no mac code had been entered into the system. She(as the account holder) rang TT and asked for a new one and was told 3-5 days which is BS. I rang them back and was messed around for 30 minutes being told they'd requested it once and can't do it again, knowing my stuff I wouldn't let up and then they cut me off. I rang back and didn't even have to give any details other than my number and got it straight away. Rang sky and was told that the number was to short, being an identical first six digits, I filled in the blanks and was told it's still not an active mac. The guy from sky said let me change the b to a c in the last digits, it's common for them to do this and it worked, unbelievable!!!

What an absolute nightmare very very frustrating. Reason for wanting to leave Talk is broadband was promised free 18 months ago now after paying £15.00 for that period of time and ringing up every few months only to be told different things by these liars what a surprise now the contract is up they are offering it for free. This to them is not a good enough reason to give out a mac code and can not understand why i want to switch providers and pay for broadband. After explaining myself to them time after time and getting passed around to different people who all continue to argue the case why im wanting to leave i was finally told after my broadband goes free i don't need a mac code. After ringing my new provider back they said this was rubbish and Talk Talk have to give you this mac code after 5 working days from first requesting which is regulated by Ofcom. When i rang Talk Talk back once again to try and obtain the code after 3 hours of trying i only got the message we are closed now!! I will try again tomorrow and again the day after and the day after if i don't suceed. good luck everyone!

My contrac expires on 2/2/2009. I pay £15 p.m. extra for broadband as TALKTALK tell me this will cease when my local distribution centre is upgraded. However, they can not tell when this will happrn so I wish to move to BT. When I phoned 0800 049 0049 they would transfer me to the 'options department' which proved to be VERY helpful. They gave me the MAC Code which is valid for 30 days.

TalkTalk refused to provide a MAC code as they said there isn't one as my broadband service is free with the land line. I collected evidence since I first connected with them 9 months ago that their service was totally unreliable and confirmed to them in writing that I suffer around 5 hours per day drop outs and failed connections. As they are therefore in breach of contract, I won't be paying any cancellation charges and I will want my £30 connection fee returned. I don't think they log calls to their Mumbai customer "dis"service call centre as one can phone back within hours and they tell you to go through all the same ridiculous checks yet again so you can use this information as you wish.

Talktalk must be lying as i tried to get my Mac code and was told that they would not give it . Been with TT for 3 yrs to be honest , I had a few disconnections at first, then a pretty constsntservice for 2 yrs. Now decided to go with sky after a few questions and telling them they couldn't provide the service I needed, they reluctantly offered to send the mac code to my email addy,I replied that I would like it now over the phone and I work for oftel and know my rights and was promptly givien it there and then. A little bit of bull goes a long long way!!!!!

Tried unsuccessfully to get my mac code today. Couldn't understand what the guy was saying (in India!!!), but got the drift that I haven't got a mac code(!!) and that I would have to go back to BT for a year. Phoned Vodafone who I'm with for mobile and was thinking of going to for broadband bundle, they didn't think what TT was saying was correct so they checked my line with the exchange and apparently TT are right - I don't have a line in the BT exchange, I don't understand all this, bit of a technophobe, but I do know that I will leave TT even if I do have to reluctantly go back to BT, wouldn't stay with TT on principal. They are completely useless, very, very poor service, connection and speed. Absolute rubbish and they need to be taken to task over it. I'm now writing to the MD about my experience - go to the top!

Well after reading the reviews i got armed & dangerous got through woithin minutes spoke to foreign girl Amy asked me why i wanted to change to Bt told her was cheaper & i was getting free router..Answered few other questions then ahe offered me a free router as long as i enter into new contract for 18months to be honest i just wanted out the talktalk experience and pay a bit extra for bt> she managed to get me to renew my contract for 12months with free router all for 19.99per month BT was £27.. I admit i did have a really bad experience with talktalk 18months ago but they are quite competetive. Didnt get my mac code but saved me £7 a month! :D

AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS. Their internet service maybe free, but it does not work. u will constantly be disconnected, and interestingly get RE CONNECTED when you dial the customer help line !!! IE as soon as u dial the help line, the BB comes back on, so the system is basically kicking you off, and re-connecting you only when you dial the help line.... note, it reconnects automatically, u dont need to speak to anyone, this PROVES they are disconnecting me deliberately.....anyway, I told them all of this and they just act as if they are innocent.... the people on the fone may well be innocent, but their BB service is designed to offer you next to nothing....they simply do not care as they are just making millions out of people joining and leaving unhappyly....they should be shut down , but alas, everyone is corrupt these days, so if u shut them down, u would need to do the same to british gas, etc etc all the other swindling utility companies out there, IE all of them...

Been round the world with talktalk this evening fobbed off in every conceivable accentabout my MAC code all I have seemed to do is waitwait & fed c**p about how much every other ISP is more expensive but failed to point out that they are probably more reliable all I want is to speak to someone in UK call centre 35 minutes of naff poems is too much. A really poor set-up.

Joined TT after the original free bband offer-wish i knew then what a complete and utter useless internet service and customer service i would get! been trying to get outbut keep being told i don't need a mac code when other suppliers say i do; then passed around, put on hold and cut off! want go to sky without incurring loadsa costs but need a bt number which means have to sign up for a year & can't check if i am eligible for free sky bband (otherwise £17)until i am with bt...blah blah..aarrgghh!!!! at times i need to work from home but continuous loss of connection means i'm gonna get slaughtered for being late with my reports again!

I work with Orange broadbband and Talk Talk are infamously bad at using Mac codes, not only do they not give mac codes they do not use ones given to them, they pratically steal the line and it's services and do not inform us so a customers account will stay open on our systems, this sometimes racks up massive bills that customers have paid for no service and we cannot refund them for it because Talk Talk have no used a Mac code. They are taking a half arsed attempt at been a reliable buiness just to accomodate for there growing ammount of Talk Talk, In my oppionion, If you already have broadband do not even SPEAK to Talk Talk, I have known a customer to not even know they had taken a contract with Talk Talk, there bound to mess it up for yourself or the previous ISP

The worst ever internet broadband provider, I tried to cancel before my contract had begun as I read afterwards how terrible they were, Talk Talk point blank refused to cancel order, now I've reported them to Oftel and going back to BT but they will not give a MAC code so I'll be without the net for 10-14 days. Company needs shuting down PERIOD!!!

I went with Talk Talk for business broadband but never even recieved the router, waited 3 months and nothing, so cancelled it. Anyway been trying to get MAC code from them for 6 months, they will not give it to me. They are absolute ****** every one i have ever spoken to has been useless. Talk Talk refuse to give me a mac code on the grounds that i dont need one when switching to sky as its a complete package ie ; internet is free. But sky say it's quicker to swap if i get a mac code. Very frustrating!
