Thanks to this site, I have managed to request a MAC code from TalkTalk. I was only passed on to 2 different people before I was told generation had been confirmed. Watch this space to see if it arrives within the 5 days promised.

I asked for a MAC code from Tiscali who said I would get it within 5 waorkings days, suprise surprise nothing I have called them only to find out that although the MAC code was requested they cancelled my broadband, is there no way a MAC code can be asked for retrospectively especially if the line is still tagged for tiscali. Does anyone have a clue!!

I am a business customer in the Norwich area and I wanted to switch to BT business broadband and spoke to a very helpful young man call William in the local BT business office 01603 789898. After what seemed like an age I finally obtained a MAC code and switched and couldnt be happier!

Having got a MAC code from TalkTalk / Tiscali at the beginning of January (because of the increase in charges for no additional benefit), I opened an account, using the MAC with Plusnet. Now TalkTalk claim the MAC code was not used (even though my service transitioned seamlessly a few days after opening the PlusNet account), and THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO BILL ME FOR A SERVICE THEY ARE NO LONGER PROVIDING! I am having to jump through hoops to prove to them that I have a contract with PlusNet before they will refund me.

I was with Tiscali, got a letter saying if I did;nt take up talk plan my monthly payments would go up from 14.99 to 19.99, told them not happy, after a lot of calls, told them to forget it and asked for Mac code, got this on 16.12.09 told new provider who said we would be active with them from 23.12. All ok, however Tiscali/TalkTalk now wont refund me the 8 days they owe me as they say the MAC code was not used.......new provider said it is...ongoing emails with Tiscali/TalkTalk as I write...

I have attempted 3 times to get a MAC code now. I requested one using their contact page on the 10th Jan, after not recieving one I called again on (around) the 20th Jan (25 mins on hold) and was told that because I was going through an 'upgrade' (which I was being forced to do to bring me in line with talk talk's product line) they could not give me one until the 26th. I attempted to argue the point that it was not my problem and that for them to keep within the industry guideine 5 days this should be issued immediatly. Funnily enough I got cut off. Will call back on the 26th and will make sure I get it this time!

Called Talk Talk today to ask for MAC code as they have just taken over from tascali and increased my bill for £14.99 to £18.48 with no additional benefit. Was told by a telephonist that they could not issue one as my line belonged to BT???? so I do not need one to change provider. She did nothing to keep my custom or even ask why I wanted to leave talk talk... glad she doesnt work for me!!!

I am absolutely disgusted with Talk Talk/Tiscali. I have been on hold for over an hour to cancel my internet and calls and I still have broadband on my line as they are incompotent and useless! They have cancelled my account but have still left a service on my line, when I phone up the number given for internet services the option tells me to ring the number I am ringing!! AARRRGGHHH!!!! This is the reason why I am leaving and have no intention of returning! At least BT answer your calls and give you advice from people who can understand the internet! Absolutely terrible service!

Been with Tiscali for 3 years paying £11.99 a month. With no problems. Talktalk (who now own Tiscali) have suddenly bumped up my bill by 50% to £14.99. (My line will only support 512KB so 8MB will not happen so don't see the point in paying for a service I won't get!) Opted to migrate to BT. Had to ring Talktalk for a second time as the first call failed when I was redirected to the MAC code department then just rang and rang till the phone cut off. Second phone call was successful and after the operator had tried to sell me larger and larger packages finally forwarded my request for my MAC code. Arrived by E-mail within one hour.

After 2 or more weeks of calls to Talktalk's service department, after numerous tests, after endlessly being cut off whilst being informed " how important your call is to us" (Rubbish!), after being told someone would ring me back and failing to do so, I give up! They've beaten me into submission. Can't wait to return to a proper phone company.

Absolutely Abismal......It was the worst thing I ever did moving to them. They have been totally unhelpful from the start, and it's been mistake after mistake. I have been told it will take a few days for them to "Generate" a Mac code, so ringing back tomorow! Regards.

Following request by phone on 26/11/09 and in writing same day stating required within 5 days, still no response or issue of MAC code. I have had a short but bad experience with TalkTalk & in particular their so called 'help service' which is why I am changing supplier. However, when I phoned to request my MAC code I got a very helpful person who said that because they operate an LLU service, a MAC code isn't needed. I questioned this and was passed to someone in their technical support & even when pressed, he was adamant that I did not need the code. I then spoke to the technical help people at my new Broadband supplier (Utility Warehouse)& he confirmed that TalkTalk were correct - I did not need a MAC code from TalkTalk. So - I think unfortunately it is pot luck who you get to speak to with all of these companies but despite my intense dislike for TalkTalk they were correct & very helpful in this instance.

I called at 15.45 on Mon 2nd November to request a MAC. I was told it would be e-mailed to me within 72 hours. Surprise, surprise nothing arrived. I rang back and was provided with it directly. I firmly believe it would never have been sent if I hadn't rung back, they are just trying to make it difficult in the hope that people will give up and therefore not transfer their business.

I want to change to Plusnet but TalkTalk refused to give me my MAC, said I would have to get a line with BT. very unhelpful and abrupt customer service. Had no landline or broadband for 4 days, promised a line rental refund which I never received. Don't use TalkTalk

Im leaving TalkTalk after nearly 3 years with them. The reason I am leaving was noting that my monthly bill was steadily increasing from an average of £22 and now seems to be costing me closer to £30. This increase recently climbed above my budget and caused the direct debit to fail, my phone and internet was immediatly switched off. I rang them, made the payment of the balance from my credit card and the service was re-connected. The month later, TalkTalk attempted to recover BOTH last months (already paid on card) and this months which again exceeded my budget and caused the direct debit to fail again. I also notice they had tried to charge me 2 x £7.50 for 2 failed direct debits on top of everything else and once again they disconnected my phone and bb. Until this recent experience I had previously enjoyed the free broadband and calls and had no immediate service issues. I have now fcuked them off completly and switched to bt for the line and sky for the calls, bb and tv. As for the MAC code, this was not needed as BT simply took the line back from talktalk. Once this happens the line is clear from tags and you will not need a MAC code to join another supplier. However they are still cabable of generating a MAC code and OFCOM (not oftel ??) make this a legal requirement that it is supplied within 5 days of making the request.

I telephoned Talktalk at 10.20am this morning (18th June-09) on 0800 049 0049 and received an excellent and quick response. I was instantly put through to the cancellation department where I spoke to a very pleasant lady that provided me with my MAC Code within minutes of our conversation. I'm really impressed. Im only moving from Talktalk to Sky so I can have my TV, Phone and broadband from one provider, I just hope this is not a mistake.

As a communications advisor, I am often told that Talk Talk will not provide customers with a mac code because they say they are not needed as they have llu line, this does not make a difference we still legaly need a Mac Code from the provider by law (this is for the customers saftey) this makes it both frustrating for the poor customers that have had the trouble but the advisors to. Please be insistant with talk talk when asking for a mac code they legally have to give it to you with in 5 days either by post over the phone or email.

My two cents once again, TalkTalk don't provide Mac on the grounds that they can't. That is correct. Tell BT when signing up to add a note or something to tell them you are on a LLU line and Bt will take it over with no hassle.

Dear all people requesting Mac Codes from TalkTalk. When signing up for broadband under TalkTalk they operate a service called LLU. LLU stands for Local Loop Unbundling which for the non-technical just means that TalkTalk install their own equipment in your local exchange. TalkTalk simply disconnect your line(s) from the host (old provider) and reconnect them to their own services. Many companies use BT services under openreach and only partially disconnect your line which makes the process alot easier. TalkTalk may not connect you to their own hardware if it is not presently available at your exchange. To find out whether they would have diconnected you visit www.samknows.com or give TalkTalk a call and ask them. Here is a small list of LLU providers: If TalkTalk have connected your line to the LLU unbundle process you can't retrieve ANY Mac codes as ofcom haven't yet established a LLU arrangement. The hardware TalkTalk uses is very similar to BT so switching back to BT should be a breeze. Contact BT broadband and phone sales as you will require a BT line the number for sales is 0800 800 150. Sign up for their service and tell them to add a notice to your account for the engineers and support team that you are on a LLU unbundled service and you don't require a Mac code according to Ofcom regulations. - Only tell them if you are 100% certain you are. By adding that the staff should be made aware of your situation and not nag you to death over why you need a Mac code, as believe me.... They Do. If your problems persit with BT contact their headquarters. Number on saynoto0870.com

no problem with phone side of talktalk but broadband rubbish, forever losing connection, actually cost me £20 when booking a holiday, lost connection just before completing booking, when connected again the holiday had increased by £20. having to stop with t.t. because can't afford the reconnection fee with b.t.

You people do not understand how the system works. If you have free broadband then you CAN'T get a MAC. The reason being that MACs are used to transfer between providers using BTs exchange equipment. If you have free broadband with TalkTalk then you are not using BTs exchange equipment therefore there is no MAC to generate. Your line would need to be reconnected to BT equipment before you can use any other supplier, BT will want to put you in a contract, even if only for line rental. Once you are connected to BT again then you can join whoever you want for broadband without the need for a MAC. Check the Ofcom Website for information regarding MACs and LLU (LLU is the reason you can get free broadband). I use TalkTalk broadband without any issues at all. By the way there is no such thing as Oftel. There is Ofcom and Otelo.

Hi If you are on the free broadband product. Your line will be on Talktalk exchange equipment. You do not need a mac code. Just go back to bt for your line rental and you can go to another broadband provider, most bb providers require bt line rental anyway. Mac codes are for broadband providers that run of BT exchange equipment. The free broadband from talktalk does not run on this so you dont need one. Customers who pay talktalk an extra 15 pounds a month for bb, are on bt exchange equipment their broadband is being resold from bt wholesale. - so a mac code can be generated. I hope this helps you. Talktalks system is called LLU there is nothing illegal about this they do not steal broadband from other suppliers. If you do go to talktalk read your letters the first welcome letter advises you to ring your previous supplier to advise you are going to TalkTalk.

My wife phoned TT a month ago to get the mac code, as an ex employee she knew the right numbers to ring and did it in her old branch. A month went by and nothing so I rang sky who said no mac code had been entered into the system. She(as the account holder) rang TT and asked for a new one and was told 3-5 days which is BS. I rang them back and was messed around for 30 minutes being told they'd requested it once and can't do it again, knowing my stuff I wouldn't let up and then they cut me off. I rang back and didn't even have to give any details other than my number and got it straight away. Rang sky and was told that the number was to short, being an identical first six digits, I filled in the blanks and was told it's still not an active mac. The guy from sky said let me change the b to a c in the last digits, it's common for them to do this and it worked, unbelievable!!!

What an absolute nightmare very very frustrating. Reason for wanting to leave Talk is broadband was promised free 18 months ago now after paying £15.00 for that period of time and ringing up every few months only to be told different things by these liars what a surprise now the contract is up they are offering it for free. This to them is not a good enough reason to give out a mac code and can not understand why i want to switch providers and pay for broadband. After explaining myself to them time after time and getting passed around to different people who all continue to argue the case why im wanting to leave i was finally told after my broadband goes free i don't need a mac code. After ringing my new provider back they said this was rubbish and Talk Talk have to give you this mac code after 5 working days from first requesting which is regulated by Ofcom. When i rang Talk Talk back once again to try and obtain the code after 3 hours of trying i only got the message we are closed now!! I will try again tomorrow and again the day after and the day after if i don't suceed. good luck everyone!

My contrac expires on 2/2/2009. I pay £15 p.m. extra for broadband as TALKTALK tell me this will cease when my local distribution centre is upgraded. However, they can not tell when this will happrn so I wish to move to BT. When I phoned 0800 049 0049 they would transfer me to the 'options department' which proved to be VERY helpful. They gave me the MAC Code which is valid for 30 days.

(30/01/2009 07:47:07)
TalkTalk refused to provide a MAC code as they said there isn't one as my broadband service is free with the land line. I collected evidence since I first connected with them 9 months ago that their service was totally unreliable and confirmed to them in writing that I suffer around 5 hours per day drop outs and failed connections. As they are therefore in breach of contract, I won't be paying any cancellation charges and I will want my £30 connection fee returned. I don't think they log calls to their Mumbai customer "dis"service call centre as one can phone back within hours and they tell you to go through all the same ridiculous checks yet again so you can use this information as you wish.

Called TalkTalk on Saturday for MAC code as my wife now works for SKY and gets free broadband. Operator said that the 'machine' that generates the MAC codes was not working and to call back next day! However, called back today and was told MAC code would be emailed within 5 days. They also offered me a cheaper deal on my TalkTalk phone package - £8.00 a month less than I currently pay - to get me to stay with them for my phone.

telephoned talktalk & was refused a mac code on the grounds that 'broadband was free & i didn't need one'. Was like talking to a automated machine. Talktalk must be lying as i tried to get my Mac code and was told that they would not give it . I later spoke to the retentions department who told me tthat they did not use mac codes , so who is lying , the first or second person . I suspect that the retentions people are lying . Next time they ring me to try to persude me to stay with them I will ask for my mac code before making any decision. Then they will probably change it anyway.

Been with TT for 3 yrs to be honest , I had a few disconnections at first, then a pretty constsntservice for 2 yrs. Now decided to go with sky after a few questions and telling them they couldn't provide the service I needed, they reluctantly offered to send the mac code to my email addy,I replied that I would like it now over the phone and I work for oftel and know my rights and was promptly givien it there and then. Tried unsuccessfully to get my mac code today. Couldn't understand what the guy was saying (in India!!!), but got the drift that I haven't got a mac code(!!) and that I would have to go back to BT for a year. Phoned Vodafone who I'm with for mobile and was thinking of going to for broadband bundle, they didn't think what TT was saying was correct so they checked my line with the exchange and apparently TT are right - I don't have a line in the BT exchange, I don't understand all this, bit of a technophobe, but I do know that I will leave TT even if I do have to reluctantly go back to BT, wouldn't stay with TT on principal. They are completely useless, very, very poor service, connection and speed. Absolute rubbish and they need to be taken to task over it. I'm now writing to the MD about my experience - go to the top!

Well after reading the reviews i got armed & dangerous got through woithin minutes spoke to foreign girl Amy asked me why i wanted to change to Bt told her was cheaper & i was getting free router..Answered few other questions then ahe offered me a free router as long as i enter into new contract for 18months to be honest i just wanted out the talktalk experience and pay a bit extra for bt> she managed to get me to renew my contract for 12months with free router all for 19.99per month BT was £27.. I admit i did have a really bad experience with talktalk 18months ago but they are quite competetive. Didnt get my mac code but saved me £7 a month! :D

AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS. Their internet service maybe free, but it does not work. u will constantly be disconnected, and interestingly get RE CONNECTED when you dial the customer help line !!! IE as soon as u dial the help line, the BB comes back on, so the system is basically kicking you off, and re-connecting you only when you dial the help line.... note, it reconnects automatically, u dont need to speak to anyone, this PROVES they are disconnecting me deliberately.....anyway, I told them all of this and they just act as if they are innocent.... the people on the fone may well be innocent, but their BB service is designed to offer you next to nothing....they simply do not care as they are just making millions out of people joining and leaving unhappyly....they should be shut down , but alas, everyone is corrupt these days, so if u shut them down, u would need to do the same to british gas, etc etc all the other swindling utility companies out there, IE all of them...

Been round the world with talktalk this evening fobbed off in every conceivable accentabout my MAC code all I have seemed to do is waitwait & fed c**p about how much every other ISP is more expensive but failed to point out that they are probably more reliable all I want is to speak to someone in UK call centre 35 minutes of naff poems is too much. A really poor set-up.

Joined TT after the original free bband offer-wish i knew then what a complete and utter useless internet service and customer service i would get! been trying to get outbut keep being told i don't need a mac code when other suppliers say i do; then passed around, put on hold and cut off! want go to sky without incurring loadsa costs but need a bt number which means have to sign up for a year & can't check if i am eligible for free sky bband (otherwise £17)until i am with bt...blah blah..aarrgghh!!!! at times i need to work from home but continuous loss of connection means i'm gonna get slaughtered for being late with my reports again!

I work with Orange broadbband and Talk Talk are infamously bad at using Mac codes, not only do they not give mac codes they do not use ones given to them, they pratically steal the line and it's services and do not inform us so a customers account will stay open on our systems, this sometimes racks up massive bills that customers have paid for no service and we cannot refund them for it because Talk Talk have no used a Mac code. They are taking a half arsed attempt at been a reliable buiness just to accomodate for there growing ammount of Talk Talk, In my oppionion, If you already have broadband do not even SPEAK to Talk Talk, I have known a customer to not even know they had taken a contract with Talk Talk, there bound to mess it up for yourself or the previous ISP

The worst ever internet broadband provider, I tried to cancel before my contract had begun as I read afterwards how terrible they were, Talk Talk point blank refused to cancel order, now I've reported them to Oftel and going back to BT but they will not give a MAC code so I'll be without the net for 10-14 days. Company needs shuting down PERIOD!!!

I went with Talk Talk for business broadband but never even recieved the router, waited 3 months and nothing, so cancelled it. Anyway been trying to get MAC code from them for 6 months, they will not give it to me. They are absolute ****** every one i have ever spoken to has been useless. I think talk talk are utter ***** and would never in a million years ever use them again.

Talktalk have refused to give me my mac code. The call center got very nasty with me. I don't want, nor can I afford to be offline while I cancel all service with talktalk. Grr VERY Frustrating!

Talk Talk refuse to give me a mac code on the grounds that i dont need one when switching to sky as its a complete package ie ; internet is free. But sky say it's quicker to swap if i get a mac code. Very frustrating!
