Well was considering moving to orange broadband as i already have two contract phones with orange. Well as it goes orange called me to offer broadband so went through the usual stuff then, the pain in the arse bit. getting mac code from sky, tussling too and from orange and sky for near on two hours, told all sorts from sky like, mac can only be sent through post we aren't allowed to say over phone to, 'just one of those things, some people get it in 5mins' to, 'you should have it in 48 hours', then 24 hours, even had one sky operator hanging up when i mentioned ofcom ! I have been told il definitely have it within 24 hours and can definitely be told the code over the phone. So il report back tomorrow.

Hi - I rang this number: 08442410515 - after a 6 minute wait, I was told to ring back tomorrow for the MAC code. THe lady applied notes on the screen that I have requested a MAC code however I was told to ring within 24 hours again to get the code. It is quite annoying to have to ring back again. you want things sorted as soon as you ring. especially when you have waited to get through to them already. I will ring back tomorrow now and review back.

It was the easiest phone call I'd ever had to make to Sky. Told me the MAC code would be miled out, but if I stayed on the line it might appera in their system - sure enough it did, within 2 minutes. The MAC will still get mailed out, but either way, I'm ready to role with another provider.

I asked Sky today for a MAC code (needed for a switch to Virgin) and was told this was not possible. Now I'm stuck between two companies who won't talk to each other ... I give up!

Sky have said that I do not have a Mac Code.I am trying to leave sky and go to virgin. Today I have spoken to 5 different customer service people and they began by saying that I didn't need a Mac code because of the system I had which is SVBN.They then said that it is not possible to request a Mac Code for me as I am on SVBN. I would need to order new line rental and broadband services with my preferred supplier. They went on to say that it is physically impossible for Sky to give me a Mac Code as I am on SVBN. I then asked for a 'yes' 'no' answer to the question "Do I have a Mac Code" to which they replied 'no'. Could anyone give me the email address for Sky Broadband please?

I contacted Sky about 2 weeks ago to get a MAC code, they said they were sending it out through the post and to allow 3-5 days. Still not received it. I phoned Sky again today asking for the MAC code and they said they cannot provide a MAC code because my broadband is in cancellation period. After 30 minutes arguing with an advisor, he said I definitely don't need a MAC code and to ring BT to make the switch. Despite me stating the facts after doing it for myself and family several times before, he continually insisted I do NOT need a MAC code and to tell BT I don't need one because it's in cancellation and they can do it without MAC code. So, on the phone to BT, they confirm I do need a MAC code and they cannot do it without. I was also given the number for Ofcom. I phone Sky one last time, they said it's in cancellation and they have to take it off cancellation then he will provide one... So he cancelled the cancellation, and low and behold, he cannot give me the MAC code because of an error on the computer! I persuade him to put me through to someone else who deals with the technical side, he says hes putting me through, then picks up again saying he's spoken to them and his manager and they can't provide a MAC code, and BT have to contact SKY for the MAC code. I said it's not down to BT, just give me the MAC code and let me go, they refuse and tell me I will get a call back. That's it. He hung up. So people, what do I do now? That is the question. I doubt Ofcom will be able to do anything. I'm absolutely furious now!

Just phoned them up. The man I spoke to was very friendly and didn't even ask for a reason, as well as telling me I wouldn't have to pay off the rest of my contract before switching. Couldn't have gone more smoothly! MAC code to come with 24 hours, he kept trying to check the computers to see if they had generated a MAC code yet for me.

Firstly..get a long winded message about advice on connecting games consoles to internet. Don't need this advice. Don't have a games console! Wasting time and my money. Secondly menu system does not mention MAC number requests at all so went through to broadband and billing. Put on hold waiting time expected to be 15 minutes. I hung up. I think this is a deliberate ploy to stop people getting their MAC number easily. Should be outlawed. A simple website where you enter in your phone number should be able to give you your MAC address online surely...not rocket science.

I rang and was given a code...didn't work! Rang again and was told what I was given was incorrect, the initial V's were in fact, W's. sent the corrected MAC to BT and was told that this had also failed. Rang Sky a third time and was told i would get the MAC via snail mail in 5 days, when I asked confirmation that this would be a different code and hopefully a correct one, I was told abruptly that they would comply with the law! NOT happy!

I have had a terrible time trying to get a MAC code from Sky. When I originally phoned to cancel my subscription with them they said they'd put the MAC in the post. AFter a while (a week maybe) I telephoned them and they gave me one over the 'phone, but it was invalid. Eventually - after arguments - they agreed that it was invalid and said they would email me a new one within 24 hours. A week later it still hadn't arrived. I cancelled my Direct Debit with them, figuring that they were trying to hold onto me for as long as possible to get as much money out of me as they could. Now more than three weeks since I requested a MAC I still hadn't received one. My order with my new provider had been cancelled because the installation date had been and gone whilst waiting for the code. Sky do not provide a freefone number and calls are often prolonged, and I am now reluctant to give them any more income so didn't want to phone. I sent them email again today urgently requesting a MAC but just got the standard "be in touch soon" response. Reluctantly I telephoned them and - to my surprise - they actually gave me a valid MAC code over the 'phone and it actually worked. Eureka! I quickly booked my new installation while I was ahead - just as well because within an hour Sky had blocked my broadband and my 'phone - seems there's nothing they won't do to try to stop you moving to another provider. I've made a written complaint to Trading Standards and I've lodged a complaint with Consumer Direct - I would suggest that everyone who experiences similar problems does the same, and perhaps something will get done. I just hope all the members of Sky's Board get fleas and their homes get rats (yeah, I know I'm being childish, and...?)

Following on from Ed's comment below, I found the freephone number to be wrong (missing zero). Phoning 0800 0466434 worked for me. I also didn't have to go so far into the options (3 then 2 did it for me). After trying to keep me, they had no no arguement when I mentioned I was after BT's fibre optic speeds. They didn't give me a MAC code there and then but said to phone back within 24hrs. Otherwise it will be posted. Hope this helps someone.

i was with sky, when i decided to migrate from sky to talktalk for my broadband i was given a mac code i did call talktalk to give the mac code but i was told i don't need one and that talktalk will deal with everything and that don't need to do anything talktalk will transfer my broadband from sky, but i am still getting charged by sky for my broadband. i disd call sky and talktalk about this matter sky say that talktalk need the mac code to transfer my broadband but talktalk say i don't. i am stuck in the middle calling both the company and no one wants to take responsibility for the mistake. i am still waiting for this matter to be sorted, what can i do now?

In addition they have throttled my connection so now approx 500kb which I find more childish than annoying

Having a nightmare getting a mac code from sky. my new provider says that it is a digit short it has 4 letters followed by 8 numbers followed by / then 2 letters followed by 07M Sky a refusing that this is right and that the mac code only has 7 numbers after the first 4 letters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What am i meant to do. Can't set up with a new provider if sky don't give me a mac that is accepted.

Wow, have been reading the below comments. It must depend who you get put through to. I rang sky (SayNoTo0870 gave me a freephone number: 0800466434 then I chose to speak to the Broadband technical department, option 3 then 2 then 2 then 1). They gave me the MAC code there and then. Don't know if it will work, sky have been great, only switching as my area now has BT Infinity and they can't match the speeds. BW all.

Joke! I requested a MAC code as Sky can only offer speeds of 0.5-1 meg. I was told the code would be posted and emailed..... No letter or email received. Called back. Waited in a 30 min queue to be told to give it up to 4 wks (This becomes important later!!!), after 4 weeks I called back, spoke to an advisor who said he would call me back the next day after speaking to the technical department. No phonecall. Called back again. Girl attempted to give me my MAC code over the phone, but it had expired! Hence the 4 week importance!! Have now been told I have to wait until mon-fri 9-5 for Sky to speak to BT to raise a manual request for MAC as you are only allowed one generated request! I feel like I spend half of my time on the phone to them. The 'customer support' they offer is appalling and the most annoying thing is without a complaints department to speak to, you have no right of redress!!! I have 34 logged complaints against them and have sent 9 emails and had not one response. The company is a joke. The advisors are a joke. The trouble is that I do not live in a cable area so I have no one else to go to (apart from bb, which I obv can't do anything about until mon). They know they have me over a barrel and do not care. I too will be raising this with ofcom.

Sky have been nothing but courteous and helpful through my dealings with them, providing support above and beyond what they needed to. I wouldn't even be leaving if they provided fibre optic but hey ho. Asked for MAC by phone, was given instantaneously.

Rang sky today to get MAC code and the girl on the phone advised that sometimes it comes up on the system and sometimes it doesn't. Asked for mac code 31/01/2011, told to wait for it in the post. Wanted to sign up to new provider next day so rang back and was given MAC code over the phone. No problems at all. Just phone them back and ask for it over the phone if you aren't given it straight away. They tried to fob me off again with , 'you'll get it in the post' but I just told them I was entitled to be told it over the phone. No problems

I have had two attempts. First, the call to Sky was organised by Orange. The Sky operator was foreign, hard-to-understand and with a completely uninterested manner, forgetting that I might be leaving broadband, but I was still a Sky Digital customer. I was told I would get the MAC code within 4 days and then he just hung up. The code had not arrived over a week later. I made the second call to Sky myself. It was clearly to a UK call centre and the operator was friendly and professional - but the MAC code requested 8 days ago had still not been generated. So I am still waiting. In another 24 hours I may have the information I need to change broadband provider. My present feeling is that I might be better off changing providers for all my digital needs.

Sky has been messing me around re MAC code for over a month now. Today I called Ofcom and raised a complaint. Ofcom is well aware of this issue with Sky and is helping customers on a case-by-case basis. Call Ofcom - it's the only way you'll make any progress :-)

I called the number on this website, then got a message saying I need to call 08442410515. Did that, selected option 3 (broadband), then 2 (billing, as there wasn't a MAC code option) they then transferred me to a very helpful lady. She applied for the MAC code, said it could take 24 hours, but said to stay on the line as it sometimes arrives straight away if she logged out and back into the system. Sure enough, gave me the code over the phone. One call, simple. That's the first time I've ever been happy with Sky customer service!

Asked to cancel my broadband subscription and requested my MAC code on the same day after experiencing <500kb/s speeds after 5pm. I was told this was fine and I should get my MAC code within the week. Three weeks later and still haven't received the code. I just rang Sky to ask wt's up and they told me that because I've cancelled my BB subscription, they couldn't send me a MAC code.

OK. I'm one of those people who didn't realise how Mac codes work. Phoned sky this morning to give them 31 days notice for cancelling TV and Broadband. The rep try to give us half price TV, free this and that but I stuck to my guns and said no. I then asked him to give me a mac code and he said "you should have asked for that first". I explained that I wasn't aware of that fact and even though we will still be getting our services until 27th December he still insisted that I should have asked him for mac code first. I commented that if that was in fact the case, why they don't warn customers beforehand. You would think that any 'decent and honest' operation would do that. "Well thanks for nothing sky!". That's the sad truth that after Over 12 years of sticking with them they pull a nasty one like that over something as trivial as that. This is advice for anyone in the same situation. Get your mac code then cancel. This worried me at first but after phoning around this is what I found out. If you decide to go with virgin (which in our case we will be and saving ourselves about £400) you wouldn't need the mac code because they run cable broadband and not adsl. If you decide to go with BT and just have phone and broadband they can put you in a new line (for free) hence no need for mac code anyway.

Rang sky - put through to a separate department, told to wait while it was being generated. Given over the telephone there and then after about three minutes. Told them that I was changing to get a line speed 96 times quicker from plus net - as they are currently not doing this - little they could say on the salees pitch

Phoned Sky yesterday and told to ring back today, rung back and got mac code, was wrong first time but my fault as I got a letter wrong. Typed in the correct mac code as I was being told it on the phone and it went through without fault. Had to tell Sky that TV, Phone and broadband was all seperate cos TV is still under contract and phone/broadband was out of contract, they gave us mac code when this was pointed out. Overall Sky were ok cos I was ok with them, the tone of your voice helps. Try to be calm.

Guess what.. another week has passed and i still havnt got it. Will call them again tomorrow.. they are taking the piss.

Rang Sky back again and they are supposed to supply this code within 48 hours. Apparently it takes 24 hours for the code to generate so I will phone them again in the morning. Everyone should complain to OFCOM as they will be fined £1000 for each complaint. The offer I have from a new provider expires next week so if Sky do not give me my MAC vode I will phone another number supplied to me by OFCOM.

This is so frustrating. Have been trying to get a MAC code from Sky for what seems ages and to no avail. OFCOM were no help whatsoever. Sky finally gave me an out of date code so I still cannot change my provider. Complained to Sky by email just now - not expecting a reply. Can't Sky be penalised for this as I was told they had to by law provide a MAC code within 5 days.

My experience with Sky broadband is horrible. My contract expires one year back but still I was with Sky but I was getting 0.5 mb download speed and found my router was not working properly.Called sky to change the router but they said I need to pay for it(even if i go for a new contract).when I called o2 to provide my broadband they asked for the maccode ..I contacted sky for that..and spend 300 pounds as i was in roaming from india but still they havent provide me the maccode.Every time they gave an excuse for this.I am still without my maccode and cannot have any broadband service at present.

Very courteous chap - but great sales pressure, including a "we'll be cheaper" assurance. If they'd offered that to start with I ight not mind so much, but the have regularly increased charges on the basis of imaginary high downloads (we don't download movies, etc, at all; this is an email, and browse operation!). The MAC will come in the mail.

Terrible - they gave me one on the phone which wasn't vaild, one didn't come in the post, when I called back they said they can't give me one over the phone, now have to wait for one in the post , which will probably be dated from the original request and be invalid again. Reason for Leaving - their tech support said I have a virus which is making my connection slow, funny how it's fine from my 3G Dongle on the same machine

I Give BT the MAC code that I received from Sky and Bt said that there was a error because there is one number missing from the code, I then phoned Sky and explained what BT had said and after checking they responded saying the code was correct so I am now left in limbo with the possibility of having no connection if no one gets their act to-gether, what a shambles.

No problem at all! I cancelled my broadband service on MySky.com and their confirmation email contained the telephone number 08442 410 515. I called at lunchtime today and got my MAC immediately.

Terrible experience. I sent a BT automated request and 10 days later still have had no response. I phoned them personally 5 days ago and they said they would put it in the post. Still waiting but they quickly sent me an e-mail the same day as I phoned them giving me 10 days notice that they would be stopping my broadband service. They will not, however, free up my line for a further 10 days so without the MAC code I will be stuffed. No broadband from them and no-one else able to supply it!

my gf cancelled her complete sky account-tv-phone-bb as i moved my sky account to her address. i wanted to keep my tv but use my own phone/bb provider. they are now telling me the phone line is property of sky not bt anymore and will not return it to BT. only way to get a new phone line is to order a new line through my new provider £60+ or £127 from BT. Of course i can sign up with sky for free. Absolute Blackmail. I want to use my own provider and BE for my broadband, as its fast, reliable and ive been with them for years, i dont want sky's rubbish. Currently still waiting for the phone line/BB to be disconnected. Moral of the story is avoid sky talk/bb or be prepared to install a new line should you dare leave them.

Since my message yesterday, I phoned Sky back twice. First time - "transfer you to someone else...", I hung up instantly because the previous person in that department didn't need to transfer me. Second time - Gave me the code within a minute. No messing about, just gave me the number straight away. When I read it back to him he even corrected me because I made a mistake. The code was accepted by my new provider and they are switching me over within 2 weeks! The person I spoke to was called David, but I think it's just a luck of the draw kind of thing. I wouldn't wait around forever though, if they are funny about it put the phone down and call back. All of the people I spoke to were Scottish, not that it makes any difference.

Nightmare, asked for MAC Code but they said they can't provide one because we have a balance outstanding, we are in the process of arranging this to be cancelled and cleared but he said to ring back when we have done so, which im sure they will then say that because we have cancelled they cant give a MAC Code. What do these people want?!

I cancelled my SkyTalk and Broadband + TV on 30 days ago. I checked with the guy that I need MAC and he confirmed it will be in the letter, got the letter 5 days later confirming all services going to be cancelled, but not MAC code. I rang Sky and they told me my line is own by SKY and no MAC is needed and that new phone provider will connect me and I will need to re-apply for new internet. I had to signup new 12m contract with BT because I wanted O2 Home Phone & Broadband - which they said I need BT line first. I wanted to cancel my cancellation, but been told by 2 other ladies I spoke to it can't be done once cancellation is on the phone line (they could activate TV, but not the phone). So in the end I didn't get my mac code :( lesson learnt

I am not gonna go with any company hence the sky for sky as there was no option for other. I have been with sky for 2 years, I paid over the bill sent to me, so I would never be in debt with Sky. They told me that owed them £20.60 when I did my workings and bank account receipts. It should sky owed me over £80 yet they they trying to get wescot debt collector on to me without them showing me they're workings out, while I show them my working outs. I don't think this is fair, thank you for setting this site.

MMM not to much i can say about sky without swearing they have me that pissed off. I phoned to get my broadband cancelled over a month ago, was told that it would be cancelled by the end of the month and i would recieve my MAC code within 5 working days by post as they have this long by law. Still nothing, phoned them last night and spent 40 minutes on hold, they were then saying that all that happened was my package got downgraded to their most basic broadband. I was told that there was noone to speak to last night as the broadband department had all gone home, but they were going to arrange a call back for me the next day, still nothing. So this time i am just going to phone ofcom as they can fine the company £1000+ and will generate a mac code for me straight away. Advice - there isnt anything you can do about our mac code for the first 5 days as laws and regulations state that they can take up to 5 working days to get it to you, but the second the 5 days are up just phone ofcom and they can sort it out straight away, but be prepared for a long hold with them
Paul
(15/06/2010 21:02:45)
Well I just spoke to a scottish lady who i told i had been made redundant and could not afford the whole package and had to move the bb first or it is very expensive to cancel the tv first £40 a month if i remember (not sure if that still stands nowdays). She gave me the code immediatly on the phone :) could not have had a better service.

Asked for MAC code over the phone, they said they have to issue it within five days and it has to come by post, i thought fair enough. Then read on here they have to give you it so I rang back, they said you can ring for it if its been generated and came up with some bull about it not showing up on the system yet. Five days later its still not here!!

Phoned sky and asked for a MAC, they told me it was not available, but i should phone back the next day. Called the next day and told that a cancellation had been requested on my Broadband, so no MAC would be issued - i would need to wait 30 days for the product to terminate first! Chased them again and got them to cease the cancellation to generate a MAC; been trying to get the code for three days now. I will never use sky again.

Cancelled BB and told that MAC would be available that night. Rang next day and then told can't give you it, it has to be sent out by post, in complete contrast to what I was told day before. I asked to be out through to someone else and ended up in the sales Dept. An Asian lad then gave me the number over the phone. Trouble is Orange are telling me it is wrong!!!!! Arghhhhhhh!

Rang Sky, they said no problem. 10 days later nothing so phoned up and was told the transaction for a MAC hadn't been sent through so tried again, nothing. Now after 5 calls and 3 weeks demanded to speak to the manager and threatened to call ofcom etc etc. He tried to bum us off with technical difficulties and other nonsense but we'd have it in 5 days both in post and email. 7 days now and nothing I think I shall be giving ofcom a ring this is unacceptable.

I called the sky number at 11.30am spoke to Paul at Sky and within 5 minutes I had my MAC code. I entered it into my new provider (PLUSNET much cheaper) with no issues. Please remember everyone to take the details down correctly, read them back and enter them in CAPITALS with your new provider. And last of all do not forget to enter / and not a backslash in the mac code. If my broadband switch does not go through smootjly I will report back.

It seems that the 5 day limit to receiving a "MAC" is notan established rule as Sky do not apply themselves to this apparent rule. It has been nearly three months now and the excuses are mounting but no results produced. From technical difficulties to confirmation letters lost in the post and the list of excuses carries on... If one simply cancels the ervice and applies for another broadmand facility and suffers the downtime that comes with such a miove, can Sky, given their approach, still claim penalty costs after bthe event?

A complete nightmare! Sky are currently providing me with Sky Talk including rental and Broadband. I now wish to move over to O2 for Broadband but they say I need a BT line so I've arranged to swith back to them. They also say I'll eventually need my MAC code fro SKY but they in turn say that as I haven't been using a Sky line a MAC code is not necessary. I asked them just to provide me with it anyway and they say they can't! I've spoken to about five different people with an hour this morning. The staff are obviously trained to make cancellations as difficult as possible for the customer. I now feel like cancelling my direct debit for their TV service as well but that would just be cutting off my nose etc etc ... the worst company I've ever dealt with as I've had bad experiences before! I'm a new Sky customer and want to use my own (better) wireless router. Being told I can't, I asked for my Mac code. this is the reply I've received today (13.03.10). Where do I go from here? Dear Mrs . . . . Technically it is possible to use another router but sky will not give out the information to do so under any circumstances. The reason for this being is Sky's routers cost millions of pounds a year to make and would be a business loss if a customer received the FREE router to then dispose of it or even make it redundant for another router. Also our system works best on the equipment provided. Sky will not be able to disclose any further information on how you can use your personal router. We cannot provide you with a MAC code as you are under contract for the next 11 months. Sky will not be releasing a contract on the terms that a customer wishes to use a personal router. This is advised in the terms and conditions when you sign up to broadband. Because you cannot cancel your account you must use the provided router to gain access to your Internet. Regards Jay

Appalling customer service from sky, I've been given the run around for about 8 weeks. each time they tell me to call back to retrieve the mac code, it's not on the system although it has been generated or something like that. the first one expired, this was escalated internally - nothing received. I'm going in circles and I've been told the same again - it's been escalated and I'm now complaining via sky.com. Is this a stalling tactic because they know you want to leave?! If it's a legal requirement to provide the code in 5 days are they breaking the law by not fulfilling this basic request?! Will not use sky broadband again in a hurry!

Am actually still on hold with sky on the phone whilst I write this. Third call so far this morning trying to get a new MAC code re-issued, last one expired 7th March and we now have the BT line active and want to transfer broadband too. Have been told twice that no MAC code can be issued because the account is cancelled and in active. BT will not proceed without code and inform me that SKY must issue code. The sky guy has just come back to me now after 8 minutes on hold and asked that they ring me back between 12 and 1 so that his supervisor may try and sort out. Getting the run around here for sure! Donna barlate is her name so we will see.

I was grateful to be able to read other people's advice before embarking on my own attempt. I rang the number that had been posted by Jon on 25/02/10. Sky's operative did ask why I was going, but since it's because they've removed smtp relay and now force all Reply-To addresses to dominant (i.e. the address I have with Sky), she hadn't anything to persuade me to stay with! The MAC request was registered and I was told to call back the next day. I did, and was given the MAC over the phone without quibble.

I submitted a request via the online portal, received an automated response but nothing after that. Called 0844 2410515, option 5, then option 3 and got through to a woman in Scotland, I think, who took my details. I was then transferred to someone else who (after trying to persuade me not to leave) gave the MAC over the phone. I used the MAC the same day to move to o2. Fingers crossed the MAC is valid.

I made my first call to SKY on Sunday, its now Wednesday and I have called them every day. I am pretty certain that I will not have the MAC code by Friday. Keep getting fobbed off with "I'm having a problem with my system, so I can't give it to you now, but the request has been put through and it will be sent to you by post in five working days". This has been teh same every day that I have called. I have more chance of winning the lottery tonight - worst of it is the poor folks you end up speaking to on the phone are clearly not empowered to do anything. This is just completely frustrating and it will cost SKY a TV customer if they don't sort this out.

Get your MAC CODE IN 1 HOUR Remember:- - the regulator Ofcom set the rule of within 5 working days but it doesn't take this long to generate its 5 mins actually! - Read through this to prepare & know what you have to say (knowledge is power people!) - keep your calm (they cant hang up on a reasonable customer!) - avoid being rude its the company @ fault not the operator - if you have them on your side it sure helps! - your tone can express your frustration which does help in step 3! Step 1 - Call 08442 414 141 (UK) go through to want to cancel sky - they will offer you all sorts of crap so be polite & ask them to save their breath / time you are not interested Confirm you want to give notice to cancel your contract within the time specified to adhere to your (12 month) contract (30 days but they allow 40 days which benefits you) *you may have to call back if you are early I had to call the following day no biggy I still signed up to O2 that evening! Step 2 - Once the operator confirms the date when your services will stop & ask for a confirmation letter *this is Sky accepting your notice period! Step 3 - Ask for your Mac Code! *they will try to faff you off with 3 to 7 working days has to be posted by RM & can get lost *DO NOT ACCEPT THE BS EXCUSES & DON'T HANG UP!!!!! *Fact* other internet providers supply the Mac code within minutes of canceling their services (google to find a few rival names to make your point) Step 3 - Ask to speak to the manager if they refuse to provide this code - ask them why they cannot give you the mac code - this is a service you are paying for & you are entitled to have this code in order to set up a new internet provider if they continue to refuse as you have given the notice & have only one month remaining so as they are being unreasonable let them know:- you can easily log into your online bank account now & cancel the Sky Direct Debit (they wont like that!) - see them in court (of course they wont win as there is no reasonable explanation why they are with holding your Mac Code) plus its not worth them taking you to court for one month subscription! - mention your blogs/facebook/bbc watchdog - the web is a powerful advertiser they cannot compete with a traffic of unhappy customers! Wanted to pass on the info so others so they dont have to wait weeks So Good luck & get you code in under an hour - we took so long as we had a lot of feedback to offer & got annoyed when Sky tried to fob us off but we were persistent & success!

Firstly, glad to have found this website via a google search for MAC code and Sky. Read the psots here and will share mine. Called today (31 Jan 2010) at around 21:10. Called 0844 2410 515, then option 5, then option 4. Call was picked up at 21:22 by Lisa, who sounded definitely local (as opposed to an overseas call centre). With a firm, professional tone, I kindly asked for my MAC code. She then proceeded to process the request, while having small talk like how long was I on hold, etc. 2 minutes into the small talk bit, she says the MAC code is ready and if I have a pen. She the gives the code and I confirm it back. Straight and simple, with none of the b***sh*t that I was expecting. True what the others say here, it's a hit and miss, depending on who's at the other end of the line, what call centre you get (if Sky has some sort of auto route feature on their IVR systems), and maybe even what time of day (or night) you call. Good luck to the rest, and thanks to the other posts here for sharing their experiences.

After reading a few of the horror stories about MAC codes here, I decided that I was going to try and not fall foul of any poor customer service. I phoned yesterday and asked for our MAC code, which first I was told couldn't be given out over the phone at all.. and then eventually was told that I could obtain it if I phoned back in 24 hrs. I phoned back today and asked for my MAC code, initially she seemd very helpful and told me to hold the line whilst she passed me through to the technical department. After a short while she was back on the phone and I was told I couldn't have the code over the phone and that it would be in the post. Feeling slightly suspicious I rang a third time and finally got through to somebody who seemed to know what they were doing (based in Scotland.. not halfway round the globe). He checked my account and found that they had cancelled the line and no MAC code request had been actioned. Therefore, it was now impossible to get a MAC code as the account was in the process of being disconnected. *SIGH* Moral of the story - if you ring up to obtain your MAC code, make sure you get through to the Scottish call centre, and not any of the off shore ones. I'm not sure if it's an training issue but at the moment it's like russian roulette in terms of customer service.

no exagerration.I spent 3 hours on the phone to sky to cancel my contract. was passed onto 7 different people and had to explain myself over and over again to every advisor. what a waste of time. sky calculated my bill wrong and said they would send me a cheque with a refund but got nothing for 3 months and as far as the mac code is concerned, I have not recieved it even though they said i would get it in the post

Requested MAC from Sky via online form.Received autoresponse immediately to say message received then few hours later email saying MAC code on its way.It duly arrived via post 5 days later.Gave to new isp (O2) and all changed over with no fuss at all in a week.Cant complain this time no problem from sky.O2 is half as much money and my speed has doubled.Changing was best thing i did.

Same experience as Gary (14/12/09). Requested a mac code and the operator cancelled the account. Got a letter to confirm cancellation. Called sky and they informed me that I couldn't get a Mac Code as the account was in cancellation. Then I informed them that I wanted to cancel TV (60quid a month). Put through to another operator and they activated broadband and requested the mac code. I'm sure that is a training issue. Should I complain ?

Cancelled sky broadband on 21st November 2009. Asked for a MAC, they said my code would come in the post. 1 week later, letter from Sky to say ring up for MAC code. Rang up Sky early December asked for MAC code, they said MAC codes come through the post. Have never received and now that sky have cancelled my broadband they cannot generate a MAC code. So now I have a 7 day outage while I switch providers. All in all, this now doubly confirms why i've gone Freesat. Good riddence SKY

I registered with Sky broadband in July and we are in december and I never got the modem which I pay £60 for as one-off set up cost. I called to cancelled all our sky tv,talk and broadband, since they offer a terrible costumer services and it took us 50min discussion with a guy who struggle to accept that we just wanted to cancell our contract with them. He said I'll have to call in a month to get my £60 back for the modem they never sent (we actually never used broadband with them...since the never sent the stuff we needed on the post)and he said I'll have to call again in January when the contract is over (after a month notice)...after another 10 min argueing and being redirect from on number to the other...I managed to talk to somebody which some sense who said they will debit the £60 in two weeks. I have signed in with BT broadband and they have not asked me for a MAC number so I hope BT is dealing directly with SKY because the thought of having to call them again...make want to throw my computer through the window and forget about internet all together!

Sky employee here. Just to clear up that we cannot generate a MAC code while you're on the phone. It has to be requested from BT which can take a day or two. You can wait for it to arrive in the post or you can call back in a couple of days and they will give it over the phone if we have it.

Called today as 02 have offered me FREE broadband :O) After 5 minutes of pre-recorded waffle on the main 411 411 number, finally got through to a nice chap. Asked him for the MAC, no quibble, and he offered to post it. I said " I think it gets generated immediately, would you mind checking and reading it to me over the phone please". On hold for another minute, then he gave me the MAC! Surprisingly easy considering this is naughty naughty Sky... ;O)

Our experience of Sky was terrible, really terrible. We have now spoken to Sky 5 or 6 times and still have no MAC code. And each time it takes several attempts to actually get to speak to someone. So maybe we have called 15-20 times. And everyone gives you a different story normally telling you the previous person was wrong. Hopeless, absolutely hopeless.

Avoid, avoid, avoid!! Unbelievable service! Given same invalid MAC code three times over 1 and a half months! Told systems problem. Told original code was the one I had given them! Still waiting after 6 weeks of trying by calling and e mail, and must have wasted over a day and a half in time trying. I have now reported them to OFCOM. They held me to 3mg on an 8mg line and though said they would up this to 8 it did not happen. They are bad, very bad at this, and not as cheap as they seem. Am desperately trying to switch to O2 but am neing held back by thus poor broadband company. Do not join!!! Utterly utterly terrible service.

Just phoned sky for the Mac Code, after general chit chat about nothing at all related to my call, I was told the code would be sent out in the post in 5 days. I then read out some of these articles highlighting that the codes had either been generated whilst the caller was on, or via call back in 24 hours, and asked why the inconsistency?! I didn't recieve a reply which was in anyway helpful. Rubbish!

Absolutely terrible experience. Iv requested the code over a month ago and still haven't recieved it. They can't email or gir it over the phone which is ridiculous. They say truce sent me one in the post (which I believe is a lie) in the meantime I've recieved mail from sky on promo, bill etc but not the all important MAC code. Everytime I call them they can't help sayig they any see the code or that there is something wrong with my account! All my bills are paid direct debit, and on time. The service I the worst I have ever experienced.. I beleve the advisors on the phone are trained to lie to their customers.. An absolute and utter disgrace

Was told by sky customer service that MAC code would be posted out to me or I could call back in 24 hrs.I asked for the MAC code just to be generated and read out to me at this time. She said that that was not possible! As it is generated on another system. I then told her that it was possible to do and that I am an IT programmer and know how the MAC generation system works. She then ask me to hold and strangely I got 'cut off'!

Rang sky on 10/11/09 using the contact number 08442410515 and used option 5. I explained that I might have to change service providers and requested the MAC number. After a fault with the line I was cut off and thought I was going to be given the run around. It was not the case and got through with the MAC number being generated as I held on line. Excellent service and only had to wait 20 minutes not 3 to 5 days. I called at 8pm when I think traffic will be light. Excellent service by Sky

I read all the posts here with dread thinking that getting a MAC code from Sky would be difficult but I have to say that I found it incredibly easy and the people on the phone were very helpful. I rang 08442 410 515 (option 5 then option 4) and gave my details as required. I was then told to ring back in 24 hours to receive my MAC code over the phone. I rang back in 18 hours and was given my MAC code over the phone - easy! There was no hassle whatsoever. I also asked about broadband cancellation and was told - "when your new provider uses the MAC code to start a new service your sky broadband account will be cancelled automatically there is nothing more you need to do, just make sure you use the MAC code within 30 days". It all seems to be going really well so far and I assume that the MAC code I have will work without problems. Don't be put off by the comments below - I found getting a MAC code from Sky very easy indeed.

Sky are such a joke all they give you is lies and the run around on the phone as they send you from one department to the other. It all started when they had us on this DNS management thing that was throttling us down to 576kbs from the minimum 4mbs which we should be receiving but were not. They "claimed" they had no idea that this was happening on our line and when they stopped it we got about 1mbs still way below the minimum 4mbs we had when we started. Anyway to make a long story short we wanted out so requested the Mac code like 3 weeks ago they said it would be here in 5 days will it's still not here! So we rang them up explained the situation and requested it over the phone and they gave it to us you would think end of story, but NO it seems the Mac code is not valid so now I've reported SCUM (SKY) to ofcom and I hope they take good care of them.... Avoid them at all costs once you're in bed with them you can't get out! It's like the beer goggles have worn off but the nightmare never ends you can't get out!

Sacha Siadatan has given a bit of advice in your "Tips & Experience from other Sky users" which i think is incorrect. I may be wrong but there is a difference between a MAC Address & a MAC code. I believe that using a MAC Address to try and switch providers won't work. The only way to get this is to contact your current ISP.

O the 25 SEPT my wife enquired about switching to Orange. Rang Sky to notify and get Mac code-"it will be in the post 3- 5 days". Aweek later rang again, same tale. a further week later rang and demanded code over phone, "we can not access it- it will be in the post". Today been in touch with ofcom. Suggest Sky should receive heavy fine,

Dialled 08442 410564 . Eventually after 5 minutes so someone answered obviously in a remote call centre. It was then transferred to another operator. I managed to get through a barrage of questions in about another 5 minutes. I was then put on hold for 15 minutes. Was told it would take 5 days or I could call back next day. I don't have another hour to wait. I will see if it comes in the post.

As mentioned below 08705 515 515 is no longer in use. Dial 08442 410 515 instead. Select option 5 to reduce Sky services, option 4 for leave broadband/talk services. Spoke to a nice Scottish lady who took my details and then passed me to a nice Scottish man. He politely asked if I could say why I was looking to move and I politely explained - less than 1meg in the evenings for an 8meg line through Sky Broadband Connect for £17 is not good enough. He thanked me for my time and wished me a good day and said the MAC would be in the post in the next 5 days. Royal Mail will no doubt delay that but I've no reason to believe it won't arrive. Maybe because I'm on Sky Connect and they know they can't offer a competitive service via that. Maybe because it's a Friday and people happy at the end of the working week but seemed a painless and pleasant experience to me.

I got through to a call centre after pressing a few numbers and then had to explain to the guy what I wanted. He kept telling me that he would put me through to the right person after he had taken details of what I wanted, I told him I wanted the MAC code and he then asked why, I explained and he told me that he would have to transfer me. He told me this three times then I went on hold for about 3 minutes and eventually was passed to another call centre. They spent 10 mins taking details of why I wanted the MAC then put me on hold, came back and offerend me a discount, I told her that the service was so bad that I was leaving even if it was free. I was put on hold and eventually she came back and told me "for some reason the computer has generated the MAC but I can not get at it, it will be mailed to you within 7 working days or emailed to you as soon as we get it". I said email it to me. That was 24 hours ago so I am not holding out much hope that I will get it.

Rang on 08705 515 515 - but this number is not in use (use 08442 410 515 instead). Phone line went dead on first attempt. Two minutes later I spoke to Indian call centre and was requesting MAC code. They passed me on to Livingston and a girl there was straight onto the job. She told me request for code generation had been made and would be available withon 24 hours if i want to ring back for it. Otherwise it will be posted out. No hard sell just requested a reason for moving away so she could fill in a form. I'll ring them back to see if it works tomorrow. All good so far though.

Here is a quick and easy way to get your MAC Code/Address without bothering to ring up the help line. Simple type in your IP address in your web browser. It will ask for a user name and password. The user name is SKY and the password is ADMIN. If that doesn't work try in lower-case. This will bring you to your router settings page, the same page that staff on the helpline see after they have been given access by your security details. The first page that loads, under 'ADSL Port', you will see 'MAC Address'. Hope this helps!

I have requested a Mac code by email as I was unable to request one by phone. After ringing 2 numbers and pressing over a dozen options I was greeted by 2 seperate operators (Barry & Mark) who would not respond but kept saying "Hello" several times, pretending that they could not hear me. The 2 people I spoke to going through the loop of options were able to "hear" me! Is this |Sky's policy when a customer wants a MAC code?

Rang up sky and was told I was through to the wrong department, I then waited 20 mins on hold while being transferred before being cut off. I Rang up again and got passed around between departments, each telling me that I had been put through to the wrong department, then finally got cut off again while waiting to be transferred after a total of about 40 minutes. I have been trying to get a MAC code off Sky for 3 weeks now. My initial call I was told 5 working days. 7 working days later I chased. After several calls being passed from one dept to another, one call lasting over an hour. I was finally told there was a problem which should have been sorted out earlier and I would have my MAC code within 72 hours. 7 days later and several more calls (lasting over 90 mins in duration) and 2 hang ups later with no courtesy return of call, I am still awaiting. I have just put a call into Ofcom. Lets see what they can do!

I decided that as I did not watch TV as it was a load of brain-washing crap, I took a deep breath and phoned up SKY to cancel. £31.50 was a drain I didn't need. I had to get the MAC code so that I could get my new £7pm O2 broadband and ditch the TV altogether. They said okay, how about we reduce your package down to £3 per month over the next few months. I thought, well that would save my changing over problem for now. What a load of complete bollox! They have continued to charge me the full amount. If you start out on a mission to leave sky then for your own sake don't cave in to their temptations!!! Peace :)

I asked for my mac code and answered the usual questions- why are you leaving and what provider are you going with. After declining numerous offers of free upgrade/ broadband etc the tone of the conversation changed and the operater became rude. I asked for my mac code and was told it would arrive in the post in 5 days. After I hung up I decided to call back to see if I could get the code over the phone when it was generated and the new operator told me that I couldnt get a code because I had already refused one! Apparently the first operator had offered me a mac code and I refused it! How "can I have my mac code please" can be misread as "I dont want a mac code" I dont know!

Sky tried to use 'scare' tactics when I asked for my MAC Code saying they would try and charge me a release fee. As expected it wasnt as straight forward it could be. I rang to obtain my Mac code and firstly i was hung up on second time i was on the phone for about an hour whilst the customer service operator tried selling me all sorts of packages to keep my business. When i declined his entire manner toward me changed. He then told me i would receive my code via text within 48 hrs and in the post in 5 days. On the 5th day my new provider called me to chase up the code and put me through to sky to get the code over the phone. the lady i spoke to on this occassion told me that the previous customer service handler i had spoken to had givenm me incorrect information as it was actually 72 hours before receiving a text but gave me the code over the phone anyway. I passed this code on to my new provider and guess what......yes it was invalid. Then yesterday i received my code by post, which is totally different to the one given over the phone. I have passed this on to my new provider who are going to call me to let me know if its worked so fingers crossed!!

Sky failed to send me a router for the first two weeks of my contract, though I had supposedly 'sent it back', 'signed for and received it a number of times' and other excuses, before they admitted they had never sent it in the first place. I was never informed my sky email would actually be googles gmail. (Which scans the content of your emails and hits you with appropriate advertising. I was no longer allowed to access and maintain my website. Sky didn't even offer the chance of having a web site on their server. I have my own personal domain name and associated email address, which it was totally impossible to use with sky broadband because of the way they google handle their emails. Was told 48 hours wait for mac code, then was told I was a liar and no-one would have told me that, and that it would be 5 days. Then was told it actually was sent by post after 24 hours, not texted to me as they said they would. (Still waiting) CRAP CRAP CRAP

Contacted Sky on 30/1/09 in afternoon, was told it would take 5 working days (ie 7 full days) before I received it; OK. My reason for leaving Sky broadband is that I don't like the idea that in a few months time I was going to be forced to pay an extra £5 for my max conection simply because I didn't want their SkyTalk. Sorry, but wth BT now giving free 0845 & 0870 calls, I'd be mad to switch my calls just to save a fiver. Thought I might have a problem when they tried to persuade me to "simply" switch to the mid service, which would then cost the same as I'm paying now, but for a less service. Why shold I, and others, be penalised like this; after over 10 years of paying them for TV. Nice to see Sky reward "loyal" customers. Now 5 working days later, no MAC through the post, so was getting ready to phone & have a row, but no. Called in on 08442 410515 then options 5 3 2 & 2, entered my phone number, & was connected to a really helpfull lady called Robin who was in Livingston (yep, even got a local person, not someone down south) Was advised that the code had been posted on 2/2/09. Then, because it had been posted, I was given the code over the phone. So, all in all, not a bad experience as I'd expected. Still have to try & use the code though, but I'll update if there are any problems with it. 5 stars to Skys Robin in Livingston.

Sky are absolute crooks! I spent hours until 11pm trying to cancel my package, paying £16.50 for 2mb broadband and freeview/freesat or worse (no ITV HD unlike freesat on pc card). They offered me free phone-line rental for a year, I said I would think about it. I rang back the next morning, again on hold for ages and passed around. I wanted to take up their offer and even upgrade to sky sports and HD, willing to pay more as the free line rental would have helped. They said that offer was not valid anymore! Only at the time of the original call! Ridiculous way to do business so I cancelled everything. They said they would text me my mac code...still waiting for that. What a rubbish company, half of the people know less than you do about their offers. I was refused a new HD box as well at their £49 offer to new customers or people staying with sky, even though I paid full whack £199 for my 2 year old box (faulty already) and paid for a full 12 month contract!! Total crooks, If I ran my business the same way I would be bankreupt by now!!!

I am trying to change to Utility Warehouse. I emailed Sky BB technical and eventually a week later got an email saying they would post it. Yesterday I got a textmessage - sms on my landline phone - as a voicemail. The code was read at too high a speed to hear. Pathetic! Also, it sounded wrong - having the letter L in it. I am hoping the postman will assist soon. Good thing I do have 8 meg via Sky. UW will do me 24MB they say with 800kish upload, that and the far lower prices on electricity and gas plus phone make up for the internet being more expensive than the £5 for sky 8Mb - which is very good really!

Sky will not give Mac code over the telephone or via email, they only send it out via post which they say you will receive within 5 days - will wait & see! .. Broadband has been awful, always disconnecting etc., ... speedchecker shows that I'm only getting 500 kbs...time to change.

Hi I was going to transfer my broadband from Sky and had no problems getting through to customer services lady who ended up offering me free line rental for a year if I stayed with them and also unlimited call package free for as year - not bad so I've decided to transfer my line rental to them. My MAC code was texted to me 2 days later.

Ask Sky to cut off my broadband. I then asked for a MAC code. They said it will come in the post within 5 days. Today, I got a letter telling me that I had ended all services with Sky (TV, Broadband, HD) and they gave me a cut off date. I only wanted to get rid of broadband. And still no MAC code.

Found this information on Sky website today... Call the Sky Broadband team: 08442 410 515 (UK) If you choose another internet service provider, Sky Broadband can give you a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code), a number that identifies your broadband connection and will enable you to switch suppliers without too much interruption to your service. Requesting a MAC: You should request a MAC from us to ensure minimal disruption to your broadband service. This process does not apply if you want to move to a cable broadband provider and you are in a cable area. You can ask Sky for your MAC by calling us or completing our online form (look for the form and our telephone number under 'Sky Broadband' on our Contact Us page) or write to us at: Sky Broadband Subscriber Services PO Box 43 Livingston West Lothian EH54 7DD You will need to provide us with your Sky Broadband account details when requesting a MAC. Next steps: Once we have provided you with a MAC you should contact your new broadband provider with this information. You need to do this within 30 days of the date we issue your MAC as otherwise it will no longer be valid. If your MAC expires before you pass it on to your new broadband provider you will have to contact us again to get a new MAC. If your new broadband provider accepts the MAC which Sky will supply you with, it will normally take around 10 working days to go live on their service. Your new broadband provider will be able to tell you when this will be. Sky Broadband will cease when your new broadband service is active. If your new provider does not accept your MAC then you may need to remove your existing Sky Broadband service from your line before you can order a broadband service from your new provider. We recommend you talk to your new provider to find out the best way of changing providers if they cant accept our MAC. If your new provider says that you must remove your existing Sky Broadband service before ordering your new broadband service, please contact our Customer Services Team and request the cancellation of this service. You'll find our details on the Contact Us page. If you are not transferring providers or you have chosen a cable company to supply your broadband service, please advise us accordingly to allow us to cancel your Sky Broadband to ensure no further billings are applied. You'll find our details on the Contact Us page. Sky will not be able to provide a MAC if: 1. We cannot validate that you are the named Sky account holder (or an approved Sky account contact). 2. Your Sky Broadband service is currently in the process of being terminated (for example, if you have already asked us to cancel your Sky Broadband service before asking for a MAC). 3. Your Sky Broadband service has already been terminated (for example, if you have asked us to cancel your Sky Broadband service instead of asking for a MAC. 4. A MAC has been provided by Sky and is still valid (i.e. within 30 days of the issue date). In this situation Sky will remind you of the current MAC details. If we are unable to provide you with a MAC we will let you know why. MACs cant be used in certain types of broadband moves, or it might be that your new broadband provider does not support automatic migrations using MACs. We recommend you check with the broadband provider you want to switch to. I need to complain about MAC provision from Sky: We want to provide the best possible service, however, we understand that faults can occur and, when they do, we want to correct them quickly. We offer a comprehensive complaint handling process to solve your problem as quickly as possible. When you call us, a customer service adviser will note the details of the problem and agree a course of action with you. If you are unhappy with the response you receive, you may ask for the matter to be referred to a manager for further investigation. If you remain unhappy and wish to make a complaint about any failure in issuing you a MAC, please contact us via our Broadband enquiry form or write to us at: Sky Broadband Subscriber Services PO Box 43 Livingston West Lothian EH54 7DD We will promise to investigate the matter and contact you as quickly as possible with a resolution to the problem and or a full explanation. Further contact details for Sky can be found on the Contact Us page. Going to call them tomorrow and cancel my... so will see how I get on :-)

I called Sky to obtain a MAC code on 08705 515 515. The number is no longer in use, the message advises re-dialling on 0844 2410515 which doesn't have the option to request a MAC code.

Sky texted me the MAC code after 48 hours of my request, i was delighted. Unfortunately, when i passed it on to O2, they said it is an invalid one. I called back to SKY, they said it is valid one, and if I want another one, I have to wait for another 30 days. I am confused, I know someone is lying, and I know it is less likely to be O2. What should I do? I am tired of waiting for nothing.

Changing from Sky is proving impossible... Despite speaking to at least 15 people at sky dating back to January when we canceled the account. They will not give us a mac code. They have also suggested ringing bt when we speak to bt they say the tag is a sky code and they cant remove it. Sky are breaking the law and the service is APPALLING. I will NEVER use sky broadband again.... But at the moment I cant use anyone else!!
